Ten Hag reveals team news for Barnsley tie
Monday 16 September 2024 16:30
Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag has provided a squad update ahead of Tuesday night’s Carabao Cup third-round tie against Barnsley.
The Reds are back in action at Old Trafford, looking to progress in the competition we won in 2022/23, and the manager is pondering his selection on the back of the weekend win at Southampton, with another away game to come on Saturday, against Crystal Palace.
There were a few minor concerns coming out of the 3-0 triumph at St Mary’s Stadium, but Ten Hag says those with a question mark are okay, leaving him a big squad to choose from.
“They are all available,” he said of Noussair Mazraoui, Matthijs de Ligt and Lisandro Martinez. “They are good.
“I hope I have headaches because, last year, I also had headaches, but there were no players available.
“So, I hope I have many players available and we can make a selection from game to game. Definitely, we have to rotate because we have to cover so many games and so it’s not only about a starting XI.”
Manuel Ugarte came off the bench to make his debut and may make his maiden Old Trafford appearance against the League One side.
“First, Luke Shaw, he’s progressing but not ready yet to be selected,” Erik added, during his press conference at Carrington. “Of course, we have a plan in our head when he can be ready but you are always dependent on how the progress will go. You can’t think, you can’t make a suggestion [of a return date] because there are so many factors why a plan can accelerate or slow down.
“[As for] Ugarte, you will see tomorrow what the selection will be for this game.”
Victor Lindelof, Tyrell Malacia, Shaw, Leny Yoro, Mason Mount and Rasmus Hojlund missed the weekend win due to injury and remain on the sidelines.
BARNSLEY’S TEAM NEWS
Tykes boss Darrell Clarke, a boyhood United fan, has revealed he plans to make a couple of changes to his line-up for the 20:00 BST kick-off.
USA international defender Donovan Pines is set to be ruled out by the concussion protocol, after suffering a nasty eye injury that forced him to sit out the second half of the 3-0 defeat to Stevenage at the weekend.Â
“It’s concussion,” confirmed Clarke. “He started to feel sick and we’re going to miss him for a period of time.”
Clarke is determined that his side give a good account of themselves on the big stage.
“We’ll prepare and plan professionally as we always do,” he added. “Freshen the team up a bit because we have another game on Saturday.
“It might be an opportunity for one or two lads to come in and stake a claim.
“It’ll be a proud moment for a council estate lad from Mansfield to lead a team out against the team he supported as a young lad but I want more proud moments in my career, I want to be managing at the highest levels possible and doing well for Barnsley.”
Fabio Jalo looks certain to remain absent for the South Yorkshire side, who defeated Sheffield United in the previous round and sit in seventh place in the League One table.
