Pittman’s Pocket: Week 3: A Breakout Week for HBCU Freshmen

Week 3 was a pivotal week for freshmen across HBCUs, with several young players making a significant impact on the field. Here are four standout performances that caught our attention:

Tacaris Bozeman – Alabama State
Freshman running back Tacaris Bozeman had a solid outing, carrying the ball six times for 23 yards. While his yardage totals weren’t eye-popping, Bozeman showed promise with his physical running style and determination, setting the foundation for future success.

Jackson State Freshman Sensation
Jackson State’s young talent shined once again, with their freshman running back contributing six carries for 34 yards in their win against Southern. His ability to find gaps and push for extra yards proved crucial in helping Jackson State secure the victory.

Matthew McKenzie – Bethune-Cookman
Bethune-Cookman’s big freshman cornerback, Matthew McKenzie, continues to show improvement with each passing game. McKenzie added two more tackles to his season total this week, this time against FBS opponents, showcasing his growing confidence and adaptability at the college level.

DJ Estes – North Carolina Central
One of the most impressive performances of the week came from DJ Estes of North Carolina Central. The freshman defensive back had a significant game against the North Carolina Tar Heels, recording four tackles (three solo) and an interception. Estes helped keep the Eagles in the game, which was 10-17 late in the third quarter, before the Tar Heels pulled away.
