Spurs defender could seek move away from club

Tottenham Hotspur came from behind on Wednesday to beat Coventry City 2-1 and book their place in the Carabao Cup fourth round. 

Brandon Thomas-Asante had put the Championship side ahead after the break, but late goals from Djed Spence and Brennan Johnson turned the game on its head and sealed the Lilywhites’ place in the next round.

Manager Ange Postecoglou will be relieved at his side’s late showing, as defeat against a second tier side just days after losing the North London derby would have piled the pressure on the Australian.

It appears that it isn’t all good news for Postegolou, though, with defender Cristian Romero reportedly open to the idea of leaving the club.

Football Insider claim that the Argentine centre-back dreams of playing at the highest level, amid reported interest from Spanish giants Real Madrid.

Romero is keen to play at the highest level

The 26-year-old’s current contract with Spurs is set to run until 2027 and, while the club are keen to agree an extension, Romero’s willingness to do so will depend on the Lilywhites’ ambition.

Romero joined Tottenham from Italian side Atalanta in 2021, initially on loan, before making the move permanent the following year.

The Argentine has been a regular throughout his time in the capital, making more than 100 appearances for the North London outfit across all competitions.

It is claimed that the player himself is refusing to move out a potential move to European champions Madrid in the future, as he wishes to play in the Champions League.

This season Spurs will only compete in the Europa League, although Postecoglou will be hopeful of guiding his side back into Europe’s top club competition next term.

Spanish giants Real are said to be on the hunt for a new central defender, and they are said to have had scouts in attendance at the Derby on Sunday.
