Red Sox officially eliminated from postseason contention after 6-1 loss to Blue Jays
After taking the first two games of their series against the Toronto Blue Jays at the Rogers Centre, the Boston Red Sox dropped the finale 6-1 on Wednesday.
Boston gave the ball to rookie Richard Fitts for this game, and he had his worst outing since debuting earlier in the month. He surrendered four runs on six hits and two walks while striking out just two over five innings.
Josh Winckowski took the mound next, giving up two more runs on four hits in 1 2/3 innings, and Greg Weissert got them out of the seventh inning after taking over with two men on and two out.
Chase Shugart was the last reliever out of the bullpen, as he tossed a scoreless eighth inning.
The Red Sox’s offense, which had woken up a bit over their four-game winning streak, was silenced in this finale. They recorded just seven hits and walked just three times while striking out six times.
Their only run came from a Triston Casas (1-for-4) single in the sixth inning. Jarren Duran (2-for-4) and Nick Sogard (2-for-4) were the only members of their lineup to record multiple hits on the night.
The loss drops Boston to 80-79 on the season and officially knocks them out of postseason contention. The Red Sox have now missed the playoffs three seasons in a row for just the second time in 30 years.
They’ll now take on the Tampa Bay Rays at Fenway Park for the final series of their 2024 campaign starting on Friday.
