Bryce Young reportedly never saw his benching coming.
The 2023 No. 1 pick found himself relegated to backup duties following Carolina’s 0-2 start to the 2024 NFL season. Andy Dalton proceeded to lead the team to a 36-22 victory in Week 3 and appears to have a hold over the starting role for the foreseeable future.
While the move appears to be best for the Panthers, David Newton of ESPN reported that Young was “surprised” and “blindsided” by the decision.
This reaction is understandable. Panthers head coach Dave Canales had said that Young was “our quarterback” just a day before making the switch. However, his play before that point necessitated the change.
Young threw for 245 yards with zero touchdowns and three interceptions while adding 18 yards and a touchdown on the ground through the first two games. The Panthers’ offense managed just 13 points and one touchdown while he was at the helm.
Dalton exceeded Young’s passing numbers in Week 3, throwing for 319 yards and three touchdowns in the victory.
Not all hope is lost for the 23-year-old but the starting job will need to be earned back. A change of scenery could do wonders as well, although Canales had said that a Young trade is “not really something we are considering.”
For now, Young will look to learn from this experience and prepare for his next starting opportunity while Dalton hopes to turn the Panthers season around.
