The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has taken swift action against an executive, Yaw Binkoni, suspending him immediately for supporting an independent parliamentary candidate in the Wulensi Constituency.

This decision comes after party leaders deemed Binkoni’s involvement a serious breach of the party’s constitution.

According to the NPP’s constitution, Article 3(9)(1) explicitly prohibits members from supporting or campaigning for independent candidates or those from other political parties. By backing an independent candidate, Binkoni violated this article and compromised the party’s principles of loyalty and discipline.

The suspension notice emphasized that Binkoni’s actions undermined the party’s values, referencing Article 3(5)(A)(1), which requires members to uphold, promote, and defend the party’s good name and ensure its objectives and principles are respected.

In a formal notification, party officials outlined that Binkoni’s actions violated Article 3(9)(1) of the NPP Constitution, which prohibits members from supporting or campaigning for independent candidates or those from other political parties.

The official statement reads: “I write to formally notify you of your suspension from the New Patriotic Party (NPP) with immediate effect, pursuant to your actions in contravention of the NPP Constitution and the party’s rules and regulations. It has come to the attention of the leadership of the party that you have actively participated in and aligned yourself with the campaign of an independent parliamentary candidate within the Wulensi Constituency.”

The notification further emphasizes that such actions undermine the principles of loyalty and discipline upheld by the NPP. It references Article 3(5)(A)(1), which mandates all party members to “uphold, promote, and defend the good name of the Party and ensure that the objectives and principles of the Party are respected and upheld at all times.”
