The New York Mets are starting to make a habit out of orchestrating comebacks.
A day after overcoming both a 3-0 and 7-6 deficit in the first game of a doubleheader against the Atlanta Braves—clinching a playoff berth in the process—the Mets once again had comebacks on the mind against the Milwaukee Brewers.
New York overcame both a 2-0 and 4-3 deficit this time around, winning Game 1 of the Wild Card Round matchup by an 8-4 margin.

Jesse Winker paced the first comeback, blasting a two-run triple in the top of the second:

The Brewers would answer back with two runs in the bottom of the fourth, only to watch the Mets explode with five runs in the top of the fifth:

The offensive explosion was key, but so was Luis Severino giving the Mets six innings of work on the mound (eight hits, four runs allowed, three strikeouts) and José Buttó and Ryne Stanek closing out the final three innings without a hit allowed.
That trio combined to retire 17 straight Milwaukee hitters, an incredibly clutch performance on a night when the Mets didn’t have their usual bullpen arms available due to Monday’s doubleheader.
All in all, it was a gutsy performance from the Mets, and fans of the team were ecstatic with the mental toughness on display:
Lou Z. @lou_nauticNOT the same ole Mets

Typical Mets Fan @soto2queensThis Mets team undoubtedly has a better clutch gene than the 2022 Mets
Gave @WhatGaveSaidI know there’s still a lot of baseball left to be played but the Mets looking like this year’s version of what the D’Backs were a year ago in the postseason.
Everytime you try and count them out you just can’t.
Robby @SorareRobbyThese Mets.
This might be the team of destiny #LGM
ChickenPerm @Chicken_Perm31Mets are freakin crazy relentless
haon @haonsreggesay what you will about the @Mets but no team knows how to get hot like they do. not even the @Phillies 🤷♂️
Ruben Ayala @littleruby18Mets gonna be that hot team in October this year?👀
Joe Ceraulo @TheJoeCerauloWhat a GUTSY performance by Sevy to give the Mets six when it looked like he’d go four. Incredibly needed after a double-header yesterday. THAT’s what DAWGS are made of #LGM
Eric M. Hammer @TheEricHammerWhat a gutsy outing from Luis Severino. THIS METS TEAM AINT ROLLING OVER AND DYING (yet)
Tony Donohue @tonydindyMets could be a team of destiny
A recent theme of October baseball has been the Cinderella story, especially in the National League. The Philadelphia Phillies reached the World Series in 2022 as the final Wild Card seed into the playoffs. The Arizona Diamondbacks did the same last year.
Could the Mets be the next?
Tuesday was a good day for upsets in general, as the Detroit Tigers, Kansas City Royals and Mets—all three the lower seeds in their respective series—earning victories. Another unpredictable October could be among us.
The Brewers, of course, may have an answer for the Mets, hosting Game 2 on Wednesday at 4:30 p.m. ET (ESPN) and potentially a deciding Game 3 on Thursday. One thing appears certain after the past two days, however—no lead the Brewers manage to take is safe. These Mets don’t roll over willingly.
