After years of rumors that a Princess Diaries threequel was in the works, Anne Hathaway has confirmed that she’s headed “back to Genovia.”
November 15, 2022: After a very long royal engagement, the San Franciscan princess may be returning to the big screen. According to The Hollywood Reporter, there is a third Princess Diaries movie in development, 18 years after the sequel came out in 2004. It will reportedly be written by Quantum Leap’s Aadrita Mukerji and produced by Debra Martin Chase, who worked on the first two films. No word yet on if the now queen herself, Anne Hathaway, will reprise her role as Mia Thermopolis. However, she has expressed support for another installment in the past, but only if it was the “perfect” script. There have been rumors for years of a possible revival of the franchise but none have had a writer or director attached. The late Garry Marshall directed the first two films and expressed interest in making another movie but nothing ever advanced as far now. This new film would allegedly be a continuation and not a reboot. But the real regal announcement will be whenever Mia’s best friend Lilly’s show Shut Up and Listen gets revived on public access.
October 4, 2024: The queen of Genovia herself has spoken on it: Princess Diaries 3 is officially happening. Anne Hathaway shared a video on Instagram that opens with a screenshot of a Variety article reporting that Adele Lim will direct the threequel. With the help of some footage of herself and Julie Andrews, Hathaway counts to three and concludes, “Shut up!” Honestly, after years of waiting for this update, that’s exactly how we feel. “Miracles happen ✨👑,” she wrote in the caption. “Back to Genovia with @adeleblim @disney @somewherepictures. The fairy tale continues ❤️‍🔥.”
“As a diehard fan of the original Princess Diaries, I’m beyond excited to be a part of bringing the third iteration of this beloved franchise to life,” Lim said in a statement to Variety. “We look forward to celebrating its core tenants of female power, joy and mentorship with audiences worldwide.” As previously reported, Debra Martin Chase (who worked on the first two films) will produce. According to Variety, Hathaway will also serve as a producer. While Aadrita Mukerji was previously attached to the project, Flora Greeson (The High Note) is reportedly now writing the screenplay. Whoever it is, we just hope they’re able to bring Dame Julie Andrews back.
