Fender’s Game-Changer: Blu DeTiger Talks Innovation, Influence, and Her New Signature Bass

Blu DeTiger isn’t just an artist on the rise—she’s a transformative force in the modern music landscape. Her ability to blend pop, rock, and funk with an intricate command of the bass guitar has made her one of the most exciting voices of her generation. Blu’s artistry extends beyond mere technical skill; it’s rooted in an innate understanding of rhythm, emotion, and performance that resonates deeply with fans. Her path from New York City’s DJ booths to global stages tells the story of an artist who transcends boundaries and expectations.

From her viral ascent on TikTok, where millions were captivated by her jaw-dropping bass covers, to creating original music that fuses her instrumental precision with her distinct vocal tone, Blu DeTiger has consistently redefined what it means to be a modern musician. More than a viral sensation, DeTiger has an intuitive ability to channel the pulse of her audience, blending complex grooves with a sound that feels universal yet deeply personal.

Her collaborations are a testament to her wide-ranging influence and respect within the industry. DeTiger has shared the stage with global icons like Olivia Rodrigo, Dominic Fike, Bleachers, and Chromeo, and has opened for artists such as Sabrina Carpenter and Charlie Puth. Her debut album, All I Ever Want Is Everything, released in March 2024, showcases her unparalleled ability to craft songs that merge disco’s infectious rhythm with the introspection of indie rock and the heartbeat of club music. The album, featuring collaborations with Mallrat, Magdalena Bay, and Mayer Hawthorne, is not just a collection of tracks but a bold statement of DeTiger’s evolving vision as an artist.

From headlining festivals like Lollapalooza and Bonnaroo to crafting an album that transcends genres, DeTiger’s journey is defined by a profound connection to her craft and her audience. Every bass line, every lyric, and every note reflects a thoughtful and deliberate approach to music-making. She’s not just shaping the sound of today—she’s laying the foundation for the future of music, one that’s rich in creativity, emotion, and undeniable talent.

A groundbreaking chapter in Blu DeTiger’s career has been her historic collaboration with Fender to create the Blu DeTiger x Player Plus Jazz Bass. In her interview with Guitar Girl Magazine, Blu shared her thoughts on this game-changing achievement, which solidifies her as the only female artist and the youngest person in Fender’s history to design her own signature bass. This partnership with the legendary brand, known for its association with music icons like Jimi Hendrix and Flea, is a powerful statement not only for DeTiger but for the future of female musicians.

Her signature Player Plus Jazz Bass, with its striking Sky Burst Sparkle finish, is much more than an eye-catching design—it’s an instrument that symbolizes innovation, legacy, and technical excellence. As the lightest bass Fender has ever produced, it offers unmatched comfort and playability for touring musicians while maintaining the full-bodied sound and punch that have become staples of Blu’s dynamic style. Whether she’s onstage at massive festivals like Lollapalooza and Bonnaroo or in the studio crafting hits, this bass gives her the versatility to thrive across genres, from pop to funk, rock, and electronic music.

But what truly sets this collaboration apart is the cultural impact it carries. Blu DeTiger is breaking barriers, not only as a musician but as a role model for young women in a traditionally male-dominated industry. Her signature bass stands as a beacon of empowerment, inspiring future generations of female artists to push boundaries and redefine what’s possible.

This isn’t just an instrument — it’s a legacy piece that celebrates Blu’s undeniable talent and influence, while also marking a pivotal moment for Fender, as it champions a new era.

GC: We are here to talk about your new limited edition Blu DeTiger x Player Plus Jazz Bass, which is incredible. What was the most exciting part of collaborating with Fender to create your first-ever signature bass?

BDT: The whole experience has been incredible and super fulfilling. Just working with Fender as a company has been really special because, to me, they’re a timeless and classic guitar company. When I picture a guitar, a bass, that’s what I see—I see a Fender in my head. The fact that I got to go to the factory, check it out, see how everything gets made, and meet everyone has been a really cool experience that not many people get to do. I’m super grateful for that.

For Blu, having a signature bass isn’t just about aesthetics — it’s a testament to her creative control and the versatility of her sound. Her new bass is designed to be as flexible as her music, making it perfect for both high-energy festival performances at events like Lollapalooza and Bonnaroo, as well as long studio sessions where she explores different styles.

GC: You said that this bass reflects everything that you love about playing. How did you ensure that it captured not just your sound, but your personal vibe and energy?

BDT: The aesthetics have a lot to do with that. They matched my vibe and personality. I wanted this bass to be its own piece of art, something beautiful on its own. Obviously, my name is Blu, so I had to make it blue, right? And I just really wanted it to shine on stage. And when I’m playing an instrument that is really beautiful, I feel more beautiful.

In terms of the technical side, I really wanted to make a bass that was good for both studio and touring. We really accomplished that. It’s the lightest-weight bass Fender has ever made, which is amazing. Touring is really hard on the body—traveling, airports, buses—I’ve had mad back problems for a long time. I couldn’t find something lightweight that also sounded really good. We worked really hard to make sure the bass was lightweight but didn’t lose any frequency range or punch. You can get any kind of sound out of it, and it’s super versatile with a unique pickup configuration. It just punches through the mix—bright, punchy, and crisp, but it can also get rocky and cut through when needed.

Blu’s All I Ever Want Is Everything LP embodies her hybrid style, combining her bass mastery with influences from club music, funk, pop, and indie rock. Songs like “Dangerous Game,” “Latency,” and “Cut Me Down” have earned critical praise and massive career trajectory.

GC: The sounds you’re able to get out of this bass are super applicable to your music, especially with your new record, All I Ever Want Is Everything. It blends pop, rock, and funk in such a unique way, and you collaborated with so many incredible people. How does this bass help you shift between those different styles?

BDT: Yeah, the humbucker pickup is really sick! This was the first time I got into humbuckers, and I wanted that Bernard Edwards sound, like an old Stingray. We tested it out, and it was awesome. I’ve been listening to a lot of house music and bass lines like that lately. Slap bass is great on it, and it complements all my normal fills and techniques. It’s the bass I’ve always wanted to have, and now I do!

GC: Do you think the sounds from this new bass will inspire your upcoming music?

BDT: Oh, 100%! It already has! I was in the studio yesterday, and I was like, “Whoa, this sounds sick.” It’s been really fun.

As Blu continues to tour and work on new music, her signature bass and groundbreaking debut album serve as symbols of her creative evolution. She’s not only making her mark in the music world but also inspiring a new generation of female bassists to break down barriers.

GC: You’ve inspired so many up-and-coming bass players with your style and sound. As the first female and youngest person to have a signature bass with Fender, what do you hope young players take away from your signature bass, both as musicians and creators?

BDT: To be empowered. Do your thing, follow your passion, practice, and trust yourself. Trust your joy — whatever is giving you joy, trust that. Go for it.

DeTiger has always been a trailblazer in a traditionally male-dominated industry, but she’s seen the tides shift with the rise of social media and new opportunities for female artists to shine.

GC: We know that sometimes, as Guitar Girl Magazine, this world can, for lack of a better term, be a bit of a boys’ club. What message do you have for female bassists carving their own paths?

BDT: I think it’s gotten a bit better, especially with the pandemic and social media. But when I was growing up, there were very few female bassists to look up to. No one was doing exactly what I wanted to do—singing, playing, and leading. Anytime someone would say, “Oh, she just got the gig because she’s a girl,” I’d be like, “No, I got it because I’m literally better than any of you.”

GC: You’ve played at huge festivals like Lollapalooza and Bonnaroo. What’s it like interacting with fans at those events?

BDT: The festivals are really special because of the bigger crowds, but what I love most is being in conversation with other artists on the lineup. Watching other people’s sets and seeing fans show up early to catch mine is awesome. I grew up going to festivals, so it’s a full-circle moment for me.

GC: So, as someone who picked up the bass at seven years old, how does this signature model represent your journey from that little girl to a trailblazer in the industry?

BDT: It’s crazy! It’s like a basketball player getting their own shoe—it’s the goal. It means you’re recognized for your style and have something unique that gives others inspiration. I’ve made my mark and added to the history of the brand. That’s really cool.

GC: Lastly, how does this bass feel like the next step in your journey as an artist, and what can we expect from you next?

BDT: More music, more shows, and taking this baby on the road! I’ve been playing it for a few months, but now I can officially talk about it. I’m excited to keep making new music and taking it into the studio.
