Lions, RB David Montgomery agree to a two-year contract extension worth $18.25 million Oct 12, 2024

The Detroit Lions are keeping one of their top offensive playmakers for the long haul.

Running back David Montgomery has agreed to terms on a two-year contract extension worth $18.25 million with $10.5 million guaranteed, NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport reported on Saturday, per sources.

Montgomery’s new deal puts him under contract through the 2027 season.

The team later announced Montgomery’s signing.

Selected No. 73 overall in the 2019 NFL Draft, Montgomery has been a sturdy running back since joining the league, racking up 1,197 carries for 4,895 yards and 43 touchdowns over his six-year career. Montgomery spent his first four seasons with the Chicago Bears and had a career-best 1,070 rushing yards in 2020.

Montgomery, 27, joined the Lions in 2023 as an unrestricted free agent. In his first season with the Lions, the veteran RB had 219 carries for 1,015 yards and 13 touchdowns, plus 16 receptions for 117 yards in 14 games.

That production came as he was part of a duo with 2023 first-round draft pick Jahmyr Gibbs, who in his rookie campaign recorded 182 carries for 945 yards and 52 receptions for 316 yards with 11 total touchdowns. The pairing helped Detroit reach the NFC Championship Game for the first time since 1991.

They’ve been back at it again to start the 2024 season. Gibbs has 361 yards and four scores on 65 touches, while Montgomery has 363 yards and a matching four TDs on his 72 touches through four games. After such success, Detroit has ensured the two will be manning the backfield together for years to come.

Coming off the bye week, Montgomery and Co. kick off against the Dallas Cowboys at 4:25 p.m. ET on Sunday.
