Pittman’s Pocket: HBCU True Freshmen Shine in Week 7 Top Performers to Watch

We are now seven weeks into the 2024 season, and some HBCU true freshmen are making a huge impact.

Each week, we spotlight standout performances, and once again, some familiar names are back on our radar after impressive outings. Let’s dive into the top performers from this past weekend.

First up is Grambling State defensive back Blake Davis, who continues to shine as a true freshman. Davis came up clutch with an interception in the end zone against Alcorn State, shifting momentum and keeping the game close. Despite his efforts, Grambling narrowly fell 17-15 to the Braves.

Alabama State’s Jamarie Hostzclaw had another strong showing, rushing 8 times for 54 yards and a touchdown, while adding 3 receptions for 44 yards. Fellow freshman Tacaris Bozeman also contributed with 4 carries for 35 yards and a 22-yard reception.

At Alabama A&M, DeQuadrion Welch continues to impress in the passing game. The freshman caught 3 passes for 61 yards and a touchdown, proving yet again that #17 is one to watch.

These young athletes are already making their mark, and we can’t wait to see what the rest of the season holds!
