Tanker drivers threaten to ‘fight’ police over incessant attacks

The Ghana National Petroleum Tanker Drivers Union has issued a warning following a series of alleged violent attacks on its members by police outriders.
Addressing a press conference in Tema, the chairman of the union, George Teye Nyaunu, said the incessant attacks have left several drivers injured and traumatised.
Citing a particular incident, Mr Nyaunu said one of the drivers sustained grave injuries after being assaulted by police outriders.
He continued that these outriders usually throw stones at tanker drivers for not yielding to their demands.
This, the chairman said, is endangering both their[police] own lives and that of other road users.
Mr Nyauna added despite several complaints made to the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Dr Geaorge Akuffo Dampare, the union has not received any favourable response.

“We have made several attempts to discuss these issues with the Inspector General of Police, but there has been no response. This neglect is alarming and unacceptable,” he lamented.
Other drivers sharing their experiences with the media described a feeling of vulnerability while at work.
Some said the attacks by the police outriders pose further risks in addition to the dangers they face as they operate the heavy trucks.
Without prompt intervention, the Ghana National Petroleum Tanker Drivers Union warns it may have to take matters into its own hands, potentially leading to further unrest on the roads.
