World Series 2024 live score: Yankees vs. Dodgers updates, results, highlights from Game 1

For the first time since 1981, two of the most high-profile, historic teams in baseball will meet in the World Series.

On Friday night, the Yankees will visit the Dodgers in Los Angeles to kick off the 2024 World Series. While baseball’s a sport where the top individual stars aren’t always guaranteed opportunities to go deep into the postseason, this year’s World Series matchup defies the sport’s logic by featuring some of league’s most recognizable players.

Of course, that star conversation begins with the Dodgers’ Shohei Ohtani. After taking his talents from one side of L.A. to the other over the offseason, earning himself a record-breaking $700 million deal in the process, Ohtani put forth one of the best-ever offensive seasons. The Dodgers’ designated hitter now owns the first 50 homer-50 stolen base season in MLB history, and in his first postseason appearances, he’s helped Los Angeles reach the biggest stage in the game.

Even outside of Ohtani, the Dodgers have relied on consistent offensive production throughout the postseason. Mookie Betts and Freddie Freeman remain two of the best veteran hitters in the game, and some of the players in the bottom of manager Dave Roberts’ lineup, like Kike Hernandez and NLCS MVP Tommy Edman, have stepped up to the postseason stage.

Similar to the Dodgers, the Yankees’ playoff run has been all about their offensive production. In series wins over the Royals and Guardians, the team’s three sluggers — Aaron Judge, Juan Soto, and Giancarlo Stanton — have combined for 10 home runs, with Stanton, the ALCS MVP, doing the heavy lifting. The top of the Yankees’ lineup can strike fear into any opposing pitcher, and it’s helped New York come out of the AL bracket with some thrilling victories.

While pitching hasn’t been the main focus for either club in the postseason so far, both teams will turn toward arguably their best available starters on Friday. Jack Flaherty will get the ball for Los Angeles, while Gerrit Cole will be on the mound for New York in Game 1.

Two of the biggest spenders, most iconic franchises, and deepest lineups in MLB will each begin their quest for a World Series title on Friday, and the 2024 season comes down to a matchup between the postseason’s two No. 1 seeds: the Yankees and Dodgers.
