Jack Catterall vs. Regis Prograis results for 2024 super lightweight boxing fight as El Gato closes in on world title

CO-OP LIVE, MANCHESTER – Jack Catterall recovered from a fifth-round knockdown to close out a belatedly dominant unanimous decision win over Regis Prograis, flooring the former two-time world champion twice to move within touching distance of his own title ambitions at super lightweight. The scores were 117-108 and 116-109 (twice) in the Englishman’s favour.

Catterall (30-1, 13 KOs) was back in action for the first time since he gruellingly claimed sweet revenge over former undisputed 140 lbs champion Josh Taylor in Leeds in May.

The stage was set for one of British boxing’s in-form stars to move towards the world honours he was denied when Taylor was given a horrendous split decision in their first fight. But Prograis (29-3, 24 KOs), who also shared the right with the Scot in an epic 2019 encounter, was not in town to read along with that script as he returned to action for the first time since his one-sided January loss to Devin Haney.

The two southpaw counterpunches turned in a cagey first third that bordered on pacifism. Catterall appeared wary of his opponent’s heavier hands and, although it was not a damaging shot, the flash knockdown he suffered in round five felt weighted with significance in a fight that was tough to score.

Prograis enjoyed his best spell in the middle rounds as Catterall over-committed in trying to reduce the deficit. But the 31-year-old finally got to his man in a dramatic ninth, when Prograis was down twice and down hard. Catterall boxed astutely during the closing stages, hurting a brave Prograis without over-committing.

“He definitely deserves a world title next. He was the best I’ve fought,” the magnanimous beaten man said in the ring afterwards. The winner of the IBF title fight between Matchroom stablemates Liam Paro and Richardson Hitchins looks like the path of least resistance, although Catterall claiming the WBO’s international strap tonight perhaps brings a dream fight against Teofimo Lopez into view.

— DAZN Boxing (@DAZNBoxing) October 26, 2024The visitor shaded the opener on account of his slightly busier right lead and established control of the tempo and centre-ring, even if landing little of note. Catterall seemed to be looking for the left to the jaw as Prograis came in but largely kept it sheathed during the pensive opening exchanges. He found the mark towards the end of rounds three and four but Prograis managed to smother the impact on both occasions.

A partisan crowd sensed Catterall trying to lift the tempo but he shipped a clubbing Prograis left. That landed more cleanly than the shot that saw the American score a knockdown in the fifth, but Catterall lost balance over his front leg as Prograis slipped a left into his jaw via the shoulder.

The 10-8 against persuaded Catterall to try and seize the initiative, although Prograis’ front-foot work allowed him to score to the body and his distance control was on point. Catterall was bleeding from his hairline in round seven and continued to back away uncomfortably from Prograis’ dangerous left hand.

Prograis went down in round eight but it was correctly ruled a slip. They then both fell in a tumbling clinch as Catterall tried to force the pace but also wore a counter left. The former champion slipped again in nine before tumbling legitimately and decisively in that same stanza.

A left to temple wobbled the New Orleans native, Catterall brought himself space with a crisp follow-up jab before uncorking that power shot he’d looked for all night.

Prograis rose at eight looking groggy and was suddenly a sitting target for shots from both wings that Catterall had previously kept in storage. Another short left sagged Prograis to the canvas and the arena erupted to celebrate a 10-7 round.

Both men checked each other’s chins in centre-ring. Prograis winged in bombs at odds with his early circumspection and Catterall responded to the body. There was a meaty uppercut upstairs in the 11th that Prograis wore with admirable fortitude.

The sight of a distinguished former champion swinging himself off his feet looking for a Hail Mary punch in the final round – something received in the pantomime style by a well-lubricated Manchester crowd – showed he read the writing on the wall. Prograis turns 36 in January and, if this is the end, he can reflect on a superb career. By contrast, Catterall can confidently assert the best is yet to come.
