Chargers vs. Browns Series History: Los Angeles has owned Cleveland

On paper, the Los Angeles Chargers should not have too much trouble with the Cleveland Browns. But if you are judging the Browns strictly on their 2-6 record, you might be making a mistake.

The Browns were able to pull a huge upset over the Baltimore Ravens last week and could be revitalized with Jameis Winston playing quarterback. If they could get a win over the Chargers, they could have a brand new season in front of them.

The Chargers were able to dispatch the New Orleans Saints last week after suffering a disappointing last-second loss to the Arizona Cardinals the week before.

The Chargers and Browns have played nearly 30 times in the past and it is a series that has been completely dominated by the Chargers. Los Angeles holds a 19-9-1 overall lead in the series but when looking at it more closely, six of those wins came before 1999, the year that the Browns returned to the league after relocating to Baltimore and becoming the Ravens following the 1995 season.

In other words, since the Browns came back in 1999, they have won just three games against the Chargers. The Chargers have won their last four games against Cleveland and they hold a 10-5-1 all-time record in games played in Cleveland.

The Browns have not beaten the Chargers since Christmas Eve in 2016.

However, these two teams are different and past history should not play much of a factor in Week 9. It likely comes down to how Kevin Stefanski can use Winston to power an offense that finds a way to make big plays on Jesse Minter’s defense. If the Chargers play their brand of football on defense and force Winston into mistakes, something he has been prone to at points in his career, they should pick up a fifth straight win over Cleveland.

Kickoff for this game is scheduled for 10:00 am PT and it will be televised on CBS. Spero Dedes and Adam Archuleta will call the game.
