No More “Adults in the Room”: Marjorie Taylor Greene Wants a Cabinet Position
Of all the scary prospects of Donald Trump returning to the White House—and there are enough for a Saw-level nightmare-a-day for the next 1,500-plus days—one of the scariest is the strong possibility that there won’t be any “adults in the room.” For instance, whereas during his first term, there were people who would tell Trump things like, “You cannot ever say anything supportive of Adolf Hitler. You just can’t,” and explain that no, you are not allowed to just shoot migrants in the legs, in the second, he wants loyalists who will simply tell him what he wants to hear.
One of the loyalists currently jockeying for a role is Georgia representative Marjorie Taylor Greene of Jewish-laser-beam fame. Speaking on a panel on Wednesday, the GOP lawmaker responded to a question about Elon Musk, Robert F. Kennedy Jr., and Vivek Ramaswamy joining Trump’s cabinet by saying, “Those are brand-new people. RFK, Vivek, they both tried to beat [Trump] in the presidential race this year.” She added: “It’s important to realize who stood with President Trump from the beginning, never backed down, never stabbed him in the back, never tried to beat him. And there’s those of us that have been very loyal. We understand his policies, we support them through and through. And I’d like to see people like us that have done that very much involved.”
Later on Wednesday, during an appearance on the War Room podcast, longtime Trump adviser Steve Bannon mused about the idea of Greene taking over the Department of Homeland Security, telling her: “You’re such a fighter. Now, is there truth to the rumor that you’re going to take over at DHS?” Greene responded that she doesn’t know what is “going to happen” and that she’s “just thrilled to have President Trump back in the White House because everyone knows what that means.”
Should Greene actually get the top job at DHS, what “that means” is that she would play a major role in Trump’s plans to launch “the largest deportation operation in American history.” Greene has previously called for, among other things, halting all immigration, so she would presumably be thrilled to carry out Trump’s dream of kicking 15–20 million people out of the country.
