Jalen Hurts injury: Eagles quarterback evaluated for concussion in Commanders game

The Philadelphia Eagles have been a mess on offense Thursday night against the Washington Commanders, and just when things looked like they couldn’t get much worse, quarterback Jalen Hurts took a couple big hits that resulted in him being evaluated for a concussion just before halftime. Thankfully, the QB was cleared to return.

Halfway through the second quarter, the Eagles ran a trick play and Hurts was hit so hard he stayed face down in the dirt for several seconds after the whistle. As he got his footing, the QB was blinking a lot and seemed like he was trying to get his bearings. He rubbed his eye and stayed on the field for the next play, and the rest of the drive.

Not long after that concerning hit, the Eagles offense was trying to score before halftime and made it into red zone territory. Hurts dropped back to pass, but was forced to scramble after A.J. Brown and DeVonta Smith ran into each other in the endzone. As the QB tried to buy time, he ended up getting his facemask pulled and then took a big hit by a defender from behind. Once again, Hurts stayed face down for a few seconds before his teammates helped him up.

The Eagles settled for a field goal, and when Hurts went to the sideline, he ended up in the blue medical tent to be checked for a concussion.

Hurts was struggling before taking those hits, but something definitely seemed off after that first one knocked him down. The QB was 10-of-19 for 101 yards and also had five carries for another 23 yards.

Between guys like DeVonta Smith and Jahan Dotson dropping passes, and Hurts missing a wide-open A.J. Brown, the Eagles offense looked helpless through two quarters. It’s hard to think that things would get much better if Hurts was sidelined and Kenny Pickett was forced to take his place, so hopefully Hurts can just figure things out in the second half.
