How New Wave Biotech is using AI to make biotechnology scalable

Developing and scaling the production of new food and beverage technologies is a major focus for the industry. But it can be complex and extremely costly. Enter New Wave Biotech.“Bioprocess design is complex, but it doesn’t have to be complicated.” That’s the belief of British start-up, New Wave Biotech.

Biomanufacturing has the potential to completely change the food and beverage industry, making it more cost effective and sustainable. However, currently 90% of new food and beverage technologies fail to scale to market, highlighting a big flaw in the system.

“In this industry, R&D is slow and insights are painfully expensive, with a huge skills shortage,” says Zoe Yu Tung Law, co-founder and CEO of New Wave Biotech.

We believe there’s another way.

But the team at New Wave Biotech believes they have a solution.

“We believe there’s another way. That’s why we started New Wave Biotech – to help biotechnologies scale quicker, cheaper and greener with AI-powered process simulation,” says Law. “With our software, users can virtually experiment with thousands of different processes and understand not only the output, but also the cost.”

Manufacturers can also target sustainability, by getting an accurate estimate for the energy, water and waste output of their product, when scaled up.

And it’s not a one-size-fits-all approach either.

“You can dynamically model different options to understand what might be the best option for you,” says Law. “What does scale mean for you? What’s the right product to go for? And then, as you upload different data onto the platform, it will also improve the predictions to tailor it more to your particular product, process and equipment.”
