Randy Couture claims the UFC were disappointed that he beat one of their biggest stars

On a night he’ll never forget, On June 6, 2003, at UFC 43, inside the Thomas and Mack Center in Las Vegas, Nevada, USA, Couture overcame all the odds to stop ‘The Iceman’ in the third round.

Now, the legend has looked back on receiving the offer for the fight, claiming that he believes the promotion wanted him to lose.

During an episode of Verse Us with Eric Nicksick, he said: “They call me three weeks out and said, ‘Andrei Arlovski broke his hand, we can’t find a replacement on this short notice, we want to know if you’d be willing to come down to light heavyweight to fight Chuck for the interim championship, because Tito Ortiz and Chuck can’t seem to get on the same page to make that fight happen. So, that’s how we’re gonna strip Tito, because he won’t fight Chuck, and we want you to put Chuck over, basically’.

“That’s basically what they’re telling me. ‘You’re coming off two losses, we wanna get rid of you, we think Chuck is going to knock you out’. I see the writing between the lines.

“It didn’t go the way they wanted it to go.”
