Pakistani Couple Arrested In Alleged Connection To Teen’s Brutal Death Over Stolen Chocolates

Authorities have arrested a Pakistani couple in an alleged connection to the death of a 13-year-old girl who worked as their maid. According to PEOPLE, authorities arrested Rashid Shafiq and his wife, Sana, on suspicion of murder. They also took a teacher into custody who worked for the couple on February 18.

It remains unclear whether the teacher believed this information to be true. However, Iqra later passed away from her injuries on February 12.

A police investigation found evidence of repeated torture and abuse. Initial findings indicated Iqra had suffered frequent mistreatment. Photos and videos reviewed by the BBC showed multiple fractures in her legs and arms, along with a severe head injury. A full autopsy report has been issued to confirm the extent of her injuries.

According to the BBC, child labor laws differ by country, but Punjab prohibits employing children under fifteen as domestic workers. The outlet reports that Iqra allegedly began working as a maid for Rashid Shafiq and his wife at the age of eight.

Teen’s Father Reacts To Her Tragic PassingAfter learning about Iqra’s tragic death from her fatal injuries, her father responded to the news. “I felt completely shattered inside when she died,” he told BBC.

He said the police called to inform him that she had been taken to the hospital. He also shared that when he arrived at the hospital, he found Iqra unconscious on a bed, and she passed away shortly after. Iqra’s father also told BBC that he wants “those responsible for her death to be punished.” As of now, no additional details have emerged regarding Rashid Shafiq and his wife Sana’s arrest or the possible charges they may face.
