Liverpool begin pursuit of Champions League striker

The Premier League returns this weekend with leaders Liverpool face 20th-placed Southampton on Saturday.

Arne Slot’s side battled to a 1-0 victory over Paris Saint-Germain in the first leg of their Champions League last 16 tie on Wednesday night, but the Reds will now revert their attention to domestic duties.

The Merseyside outfit have established a 13-point lead over second-placed Arsenal in the top flight standings, and Slot will hope to see his side take another step towards the title when they host the Saints.

In the meantime, it has emerged that the Reds are pursuing a Champions League striker.

According to TBR Football, Liverpool have opened talks about a move for RB Leipzig striker Benjamin Sesko.

The report claims that the player is keeping his options open in regard to his future, however he has previously hinted that a move to London would be his preference with Arsenal and Chelsea therefore among the frontrunners to land the player.

Sesko has attracted interest from a number of the Premier League’s biggest clubs

Sesko, 21, joined Leipzig from Red Bull Salzburg in the summer of 2023 and has since played 76 times for the German side across all competitions, coring 35 goals.

Manchester United, Aston Villa and Newcastle United are also said to be keeping tabs on the Slovenia international.

It is claimed that Darwin Nunez could leave Anfield this summer, having struggled for form this term.

The Reds are therefore on the hunt for a potential replacement, and Sesko has emerged as one of Slot’s top targets.

The Slovenian is contracted to Leipzig until the end of the 2028/29 campaign, but the report claims that he has a release clause currently set at £58 million.

That clause could, however, increase depending on the performances of both Sesko himself and Leipzig as a team.

It is also claimed that Sesko has a gentleman’s agreement with his current employers that means the German side will allow him to leave the club this summer if their demands are met.
