Kitten, how did the idea for Pinktastic Plastixx come to life, and what inspired you to bring together such a diverse age range in your band?

So, I went on a search for players, and in the beginning, I wasn’t even looking for all females. I just put a fun ad on Craigslist saying, “I don’t care if you are 9-99 years old, if you can play, we need ya!! – no ageist b******t”

BUT, what I got in response was a lot of angry dudes who had a major problem with a female my age wanting to front a band! I got some really rude responses like “Give it UP, Grandma,” and “You’re way too old! Who do you think you are!” which pissed me off but made me want to do it even MORE!

Then I decided to quickly change my whole band design and thought perhaps I should try finding all females!? I didn’t even know that it was possible, but I actually had to turn girls away that wanted to be in our band!

it was perfect — all positive and fun responses. I knew I did the right thing.

Can you share the story of how the band members met and decided to form Pinktastic Plastixx? Was there a “pink moment” that sealed the deal?

Kitten:  We all met at AMP Rehearsal studio in North Hollywood, and it was love at first strum.

I believe we have a commercial appeal that can easily be marketed.

How did you go about choosing the band members? Was the ability to embrace pink a key audition factor?

Kitten: Oh, absolutely! Ya gotta like pink, and they all got the pink memo.

I also went at forming this band as sort of a casting process — I chose a bunch of my favorites to audition, and the ones I decided on just had
IT! Of course, I based the decision on their talent, but the look had to be Barbiecore. For I wasn’t just creating a band; I was building a brand. I believe we have a commercial appeal that can easily be marketed. When you are undeniable
 they can’t deny you.

Can each of you introduce yourselves and share what instrument you play or what role you have in the band?

Hey! Kitten Kay Sera, Singer & pseudo Manager. (Although I’m waiting for the right management team to step in soon.)

Hi, I’m Meredith! I’m the bassist and newest member of Pinktastic Plastixx.

I’m Celinda, and I play guitar! I bring big smiles, fun riffs, and the occasional sweet treat to the band. 🙂

I’m Riana Hisako, and I joined Pinktastic Plastixx in September 2024! I’m the keytar/synth player. I love coming up with new ideas to put into our existing songs, supporting my bandmates’ growth and musicality, and pink-ifying everything!

I’m Alexa, and I am the drummer in the band.

Was there a specific musical or personal connection that made you all feel like this group was meant to be?

Kitten:  It’s just a feeling.

Celinda (guitarist) wasn’t as experienced when I auditioned her at our very first audition in August of 2022, but I loved her look, personality, and her smile. She also played really well and had two pink guitars, so I figured we would grow together
and we have. I had brought my Production Assistant to this audition, and she liked another player, and I was like, NOPE! I knew in my heart it was Celinda.

Alexa (drummer) I knew right off
she was the first member I chose. She is very dedicated and plays drums like a beast! When she let us wrap her drums in pink, it was a special moment. Alexa is always the first one to show up at rehearsals.

Riana (keytar) came to us a little later as she took over for Rocky, who was our original keytar player but is now touring with Cyndi Lauper. I love Riana’s enthusiasm and positivity. She is also really easy to work with and schedule. She knows her stuff and gives it her all. Riana is just FUN.

Meredith is our new bassist, and she couldn’t BE more perfect. When we were looking for a new bass player, she reached out on Instagram and expressed interest. However, she was really busy with her acting and modeling career, but in the end, it all worked out, and she joined the band. Lucky US!

Meredith:  There were a few personal connections I had with the band before I joined! But the most prominent one was at the Guitar Girl Magazine shoot. My birthday was a couple of weeks away, and Kitten asked when my birthday is. When I said November 10th, she said that it’s also her father’s and sister’s birthdays! I enjoy numbers and find meaning in them, especially dates and times.

Celinda:  It’s hard for me to pin down a single moment, but looking back on how the band formed in the first place, I feel like it was meant to be. I didn’t know Kitten before, but she found me on Instagram because I was friends with Alexa there, and when Kitten asked me to audition, I had never been in a band before and had only been playing guitar for around a year and a half at that point. So, just getting the gig felt like a miracle, in a way. Our first show together (at The Viper Room in November 2022) was also my very first time performing on guitar ever, so that will always be a special moment when I looked around and thought, “Wow, now THIS is a band!” There’s been a couple of changes in the band since then, but no matter who we’ve got on stage, every show we play or event we attend together is a blast, and I can’t wait for more pink adventures together.

Riana:  I discovered Pinktastic Plastixx about 12 hours before Kitten reached out, asking if I would play with them. The first band I ever played in was an all-girl band, so I have always had a soft spot for that grrrrrl energy! Combined with the glam pink rock energy, I was sold. Twelve hours before, I had been thinking it would be so cool to play for Pinktastic Plastixx. All the puzzle pieces went together, and the rest is history!

Alexa:  Yeah, it’s a very unique kind of band. The image and brand is all pink. A band hasn’t done that before. The sound is pop rock, which I am a fan of playing to that type of style.

Kitten, as the lead vocalist, how do you guide the creative vision of the band, and do each of the members contribute to songwriting or production?

Luckily, I’m a very visual person. That is probably my favorite aspect of what I get to contribute to the band.

We are not quite at the songwriting stage yet. My friend, Kelly Kidd, wrote the two singles we have out, “Super Sexxy” and “Kinda Crazy,” and as you can hear, he is a hit maker. I wrote the two new songs, “Chick on The Side” and “Pink is Punk,” with cowriters. We are beginning to write our own material though as a band. Celinda put guitar down on a killer song she started writing, and I just wrote the lyrics, so I am looking forward to hearing how it comes to life.

You know, nothing is really challenging if you love what you are doing.

What challenges, if any, have you faced as a multi-generational, all-female band, and how have you overcome them together?

Kitten:  You know, nothing is really challenging if you love what you are doing. It used to be hard scheduling everyone. We are five very busy gals. I also have solo TV appearances, branding deals, and modeling that I have to juggle. I’m just excited to be working so much. But in the end, we always make it happen, collectively! I love this band
every single one of my bandmates is so much fun to be with. I think it shows in our photos and performances.

Kitten, you’ve said, “Dreams don’t expire!” How does this philosophy influence your music and performances?

Well, there is no expiration date on your foot. I feel that at a certain age you just don’t care what anyone thinks anymore, ha! You’ve seriously got nothing to lose, so just go out there and have fun. I don’t mind being the crazy one in the band!! I have performed on stage in a pink straight jacket for our song “Kinda Crazy”! Life’s too short to worry what others think of you. So just “do you.”

Kitten, what do you hope Pinktastic Plastixx brings to the music industry in terms of both sound and message?

Basically, fear nothing and have fun! Anything is possible
 and we are living proof.

Fashion and pink seem to be integral to your identity as a band. How do you all work together to create your iconic style?

Kitten:  Yes! Thank you! I think it is very important to have a look. I also only wear the color pink (since 1980), so it’s normal for me, but the rest of the girls do pink with white or black. We don’t do any other colors.

The sound and the look need to be equal. All our instruments are, one by one, becoming PINK.

I used to work as a fashion stylist, which gives me the knowledge I need when deciding what I want to wear. I love anything WILD!

Meredith:  For the magazine shoot, Kitten had my wardrobe ready for me! She asked my sizes and, bam, there they were. That was so rad. For shows, I’ve been collecting pink pieces that I love! We all have our own vibe (well, Celinda and Riana tend to unintentionally match often), but seeing our personalities shine through while wearing the same color is awesome.

Celinda:  Kitten is the Queen of Pink but often trusts us to style ourselves, staying within the band colors of pink/white/black, of course! If there’s a theme, sometimes we’ll get matching outfits (like in the music video for “Kinda Crazy”), or Kitten will send us inspo references for the types of looks we want to aim for. It’s cool because we’re all pink and Barbiecore, but we each have our unique styles and vibes within that. It’s like a true Barbie collection of different characters. Everyone goes all out, and it’s fun to chat with each other about outfits, clothes, accessories, etc!

Riana:  Well, the rule is simple — PINK! We wear white and black, too, but the focal point of each outfit is pink. I love seeing how each of us can bring out our own sense of style and personality while still maintaining the band brand.

Alexa:  I usually wear black and dark colors. I like combining pink with black. It gives it an older Y2K emo look kind of like Avril in the mid-2000s.

Do you collaborate with designers or style your own looks for performances and music videos?

Kitten:  For performances, we pretty much do our own thing, but again in our color palette of pink, white and black. I really want everyone to feel comfortable and be themselves.

When we do photo shoots, I have lots of options and ideas. Our band is living Barbie dolls, so I enjoy picking out outfits for us when needed. Like, when we did the music video “Kinda Crazy,” I had them dressed as nurses — I loved that look. Also, the pink personalised matching varsity jackets in the “Super Sexxy” video. It was such an iconic pop-punk look. That was my vision. I have noticed bands emulating our style now.

Who are some of your musical influences, both collectively and individually?

Kitten:  I think we all can agree on Green Day. I mean, Pinktastic Plastixx will open for Green Day; it’s a given. I loved the ’80s music growing up, especially Annie Lennox/Eurythmics and Boy George/Culture Club. I also adore David Bowie, Green Day, Queen, Weezer, Laurie Anderson, Lene Lovich, Kate Bush, Joan Jett, Chapel Roan, Strawberry Switchblade, Cher, Dolly Parton, Rolling Stones, Lady Gaga, Jane Siberry, and Bette Midler
the list is probably 10 pages long, lol.

Meredith:  I know Green Day is a huge inspiration for Pinktastic Plastixx. Really, the entire ’90s and ’00s pop-punk scene. My personal musical influences include Prince and Lauren Mayberry. And I don’t know if I’d say he’s one of my musical influences, but I do find myself singing the Bo Burnham Inside album often.

Celinda:  Individually, I love 2000s pop-punk/emo (My Chemical Romance is my favorite band) as well as punk rock, hard rock, and metal. Both MCR guitarists are huge influences on my playing style as well as Nuno Bettencourt of Extreme and Phil Collen of Def Leppard. I also love bands like Halestorm, The Pretty Reckless, New Years Day, and Metallica.

As a band, I think our sound is quite pop punk and pop rock with a touch of ’70s and ’80s pop influences. Some of our collective band inspirations and artists we’ve been compared to include Green Day, Weezer, The Go-Go’s, Joan Jett, and The Bangles.

Riana:  Collectively, I would say our music is influenced by artists such as Joan Jett, The Go-Go’s, and AC/DC. Our sound has a lot of that classic ’80s rock energy, but with a feminine, glam twist. Personally, my biggest influences are Chopin, Bill Evans, and Amy Winehouse. That’s a wide range of genres, but I was classically trained before I attended Berklee College of Music, where I then learned how to play jazz. Now, my playing blends Chopin-like motifs and Bill Evans-styled voicings while blending seamlessly into the rock sound, merging the genres like Amy Winehouse!

Alexa:  I listen to all kinds of music, but mainly rock and metal. I would say the top bands on my list are: Nirvana, Blink 182, Korn, Slipknot, My Chemical Romance, System of a Down, Fall Out Boy, Green Day, Foo Fighters, and Bring Me the Horizon.

And, you know, as they said it, it just made me want to do

it even more, to prove them wrong.

What advice would you give to people — especially women — who feel like they’ve missed their chance to pursue their dreams?

Kitten:  Oh, I cannot stress enough that it is never too late! I was told that I was too old to be the lead singer in a band and to be on the cover of VOGUE, but I did it! And, you know, as they said it, it just made me want to do it even more, to prove them wrong. Now I look at all that we have achieved as a band, and I am so tickled pink that we are actually doing it and that I didn’t give up. Please do not listen to the doubters or the negativity. You know in your heart what you are capable of! I also distance myself from negativity when it comes to my dreams. Like if someone is criticizing my dream, I cut them off. You either support me or you get off my pink cloud. Now, it is your time to shine! Pinky promise, you won’t regret it. I surely don’t.

If each of you could describe Pinktastic Plastixx in three words, what would they be?

Kitten:  Barbiecore, eye candy (Spin Magazine called us this, and I loved it!), and animated.

Meredith:  Feel-good, revolutionary, and feminine.

Celinda:  Fun, captivating, and energetic.

Riana:  Vibrant, electrifying, and GLAM!

Alexa:  Pink, bubbly, and rock.

What’s been the most memorable or “pink-tastic” moment for the band so far?

Kitten:  Oh gosh! There are so many. I would say opening for the Motels was really great! I shared a moment and a cupcake with Martha Davis backstage and she was so nice and encouraging about our band. Also, being the celebrity guests in the Pride Parades in Los Angeles and West Hollywood was lots of fun. I think when we were the Top 10 to Watch for 2025 in Spin Magazine — we started being taken more seriously. Then, Billboard Magazine also added us to their list of Top 10 to Watch for their 2025, and the doors have been swinging open when before I had been trying to pry them open with my pink heels, haha!

Oh, and I need to add: being the calendar girls for your Guitar Girl Magazines 2025 Calendar!! What an honor. In fact, I named our group chat ‘Calendar Girls!’

What are your dreams for the future of the band? Are there specific venues, festivals, or collaborations you’d love to take part in?

Kitten:  I think playing the Hollywood Bowl under the stars would be dreamy! It is definitely on my bucket list. I am also SO excited to play the first all-girl band festival named GIRLACTIC in August! It is truly the first of its kind, and we are the proud founders of the GIRLACTIC Festival. We just needed a platform for all these girl bands that are not being seen or promoted through radio or media. I seriously had NO idea how many all-girl bands were out there until we started National All-Girl Bands Day on August 27, 2024. And you know why I didn’t know? Because no one is seeing them. Girl bands are only thought of as “just a novelty,” and frankly, I am sick of it. We need more visibility and to be taken seriously! We so appreciate Guitar Girl Magazine for featuring Pinktastic Plastixx and other all-girl bands and female artists.

The fact is that women make up less than 20% OF MUSICIANS ON FESTIVAL STAGES. GIRLACTIC is 100% women and takes place in Los Angeles on August 27th!

Meredith:  My dreams for the future of the band are to play a music festival and tour.

Celinda:  It would be so cool to play a festival like Coachella and go on tour in support of a band like Green Day!

Riana:  We hope to tour at some point in the future! It would be pinkredible to share our music and energy with other cities! After we host our Girlchella event in August, it would definitely be cool to play more festivals.

Alexa:  It would be cool to hop on a tour with a band that we like and inspires us. Definitely release more music and music videos. Gotta level up the short video TikTok type of content. The industry looks deep into that stuff. Hopefully, play outside of LA, at least because we haven’t. It would be cool to do a show in my hometown, San Diego.

Are you working on any new music, and if so, what can fans expect from your next release?

Kitten: We are recording our new single “PINK IS PUNK” with Brian Judd, who worked with Green Day, so we are in great hands and this step up is a highlight in our career. It’s a song that I co-wrote. The film Mean Girls was kind of my pink-spiration, haha! 🙂

A documentary is being filmed about my pink life and career, and we have a team filming us in the recording studio with Brian. I think the big events should always be documented. We also have a new tune called “Chick On The Side” coming out soon that I wrote with Wes Styles, who also produced the single.

How do you hope Pinktastic Plastixx inspires a “whole new demographic” and challenges ageism in the music industry?

Kitten: Maybe by just making it the norm to be an older performer and doing what you love with absolutely no criticism or ageist b******t. Men seem to get away with being older more than women do in the music industry. Let us lead by example.

The rules are
there are no rules. And that makes it rock ‘n’ roll!
