Angela Bassett Met Gala: The Star’s Debut Was Worth the Wait

Angela Bassett’s Met Gala 2025 look proves she may have a new accolade to add to her resume—queen of the steps.

The iconic actor and Academy Award nominee attended fashion’s biggest night for the first time on Monday. Yes, we know, we can’t believe she has never attended before either!

But Angela Bassett’s Met Gala look was worthy of this iconic occasion. This year, the Costume Institute exhibition is “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style,” which is “a cultural and historical examination of Black style over 300 years through the concept of dandyism.” The theme of the Gala is “Tailored for You.”

The former Glamour Woman of the Year was perfectly on theme, wore a blue velvet jumpsuit over a sheer suit and black tie. She accessorized the look with a silver purse, black cane, shiny black pumps, and a black hat.

Her hair was done by PHYTO, which worked with stylist Randy Stodghill to create her look. The star wore her hair in loose curls under her hat.

When Bassett was honored as a Glamour Woman of the Year in 2022, she spoke to us about legacy, and how her pursuit of perfection has carried her through her storied career.

“The Word says, ‘To whom much is given, much is required,’ and I have been extraordinarily blessed,” she said. “And I know it.”

And with her Met Gala appearance, it’s clear her dedication is paying off.
