Nigeria vs Senegal: Where the match will be won and lost

The Flying Eagles of Nigeria are set to take on young Lions of Senegal in their AFCON U-20 quarter-final clash in Egypt tomorrow afternoon, Soccernet.ng reports.

Aliyu Zubairu’s men defeated Tunisia in the group stage, playing draws against Morocco and Kenya to seal a spot amongst the final eight of the tournament.

Senegal, on the other hand, won a game in their group, drew one and lost one, qualifying with four points from three games.

The Senegalese are the reigning Champions, and the Flying Eagles have their work cut out if they’re to reach the semi-finals.

1. Mentality

History doesn’t favour either side in this clash, meaning the Flying Eagles have to lock in to create a new memory that they’ll look back at and be filled with pride.

The seven-time Champions conceded just two goals in the group stage, but will need to be on the front foot in attack against Senegal.

The young Teranga Lions do not give up easily, as they’ve not lost their last 13 open-play games during the knockout stage of the tournament. Should the game get into extra time, Zubairu will be tasked with keeping the heads of the youngsters in the game from the touchline.

Nigeria’s captain, Daniel Bameyi, was immense during the group stage fixtures, scoring from twelve yards against Kenya. He’ll be required to be at his best if the Flying Eagles are to make it to the semi-final.

Neither side has been prolific in front of goal in Egypt, but with all to play for tomorrow, a costly defensive error could cost either side the game.

3. Attack

Like Bameyi, Lillestrom SK attacker, Kpaboro Ariehri was a joy to behold during Nigeria’s 1-0 win against Kenya, and the 19-year-old will be crucial for the Flying Eagles tomorrow afternoon, and whether Nigeria will bag a win depends heavily on their ability to create and convert chances.
