PlayStation Showcase, State of Play Event for May Appears Increasingly Unlikely

Reliable insider has heard nothing

For pretty much all of the PS5 generation, PlayStation fans have come to expect that Sony will host some kind of digital event in the month of May. The firm has put on either a PlayStation Showcase or a State of Play around this time every year since 2019, but it’s looking increasingly likely Sony will be bucking that trend in 2025.

According to NateDrake, an incredibly reliable leaker posting on the ResetEra forum, they “haven’t heard anything about a May event from Sony for this year”. Of course, there’s a chance a livestream is taking place and NateDrake’s sources simply aren’t privy to those plans.

Though, this is a user that correctly shared when the Nintendo Switch 2 would receive its online unveiling, and has been accurate many other times previously, especially when documenting what PS5 ports Microsoft has planned. They have already been proven correct with PS5 versions of Forza Horizon 5 and Gears of War. There’s no reason to doubt them.

Sony not having any kind of livestream during the traditional summer season of gaming announcements would be quite disappointing, but it wouldn’t come as too much of a surprise. Death Stranding 2 is now only a month away, Marathon is proving a disaster to the hardcore, and Ghost of Yotei already has its release plans detailed.

In fact, that final point is probably one of the biggest factors fuelling doubt around an event. A release date for Ghost of Yotei could have very comfortably concluded a State of Play livestream. Instead, Sony decided to randomly announce it on a Wednesday afternoon last month.

It still has the likes of Marvel’s Wolverine and Saros confirmed, but if they’re not ready to be shown again, Sony may be struggling for enough content to justify hosting a livestream. A PlayStation Showcase has historically been heavy on the first-party content while the State of Play events have been third-party focused, with the occasional PlayStation Studios reveal.

The lack of an in-house Sony showcase doesn’t rule out new PS5 exclusives from being announced next month, though. As demonstrated during last year’s Summer Game Fest livestream, Sony is willing to give Geoff Keighley a few reveals, as he announced LEGO Horizon Adventures on his stage.

How would you feel if Sony didn’t have any kind of livestream in the next few weeks? Put your thoughts in the comments below.

Liam grew up with a PlayStation controller in his hands and a love for Metal Gear Solid. Nowadays, he’s found playing the latest and greatest PS5 games as well as supporting Derby County. That last detail is his downfall.
