Sex and the City Fans Slam Kristin Davis and Cynthia Nixon’s New Comments About Samantha Jones
Sex and the City fans don’t play about Samantha Jones, no matter what the cast of And Just Like That… thinks about her.
In a new interview with Attitude Magazine, both Cynthia Nixon and Kristin Davis were asked if they hope their characters are texting Samantha Jones (Kim Cattrall), as we see Carrie (Sarah Jessica Parker) do in season three of And Just Like That… The interviewer also wondered if Nixon thought Miranda would seek guidance and support from Samantha as she explores her sexuality.
“No,” Nixon said with a laugh. “No, I don’t.”
Davis had a more lengthy response. “Even in the past, I don’t feel that Charlotte really relied on Samantha that much for support,” Davis replied. “In the beginning, especially. Sometimes, I have these funny episodes that I’m looking back on now with the podcast, where I take care of Samantha, which is fascinating, but I don’t feel like Charlotte really relied on Samantha that much. I don’t know if she’d reach out to her. But I do think she’d be friendly with her, you know, I don’t think she has any particular issues or problems with her.”
Samantha fans aren’t buying it. “Why are they being so weird,” one fan responded to Attitude’s TikTok video, while another replied, “Trying to downplay the fact that Samantha was essential to the dynamic💀.” One user claimed both actors were talking about Samantha as if she was “just a random side character.”
The criticism continued beyond the publication’s comments section, sparking Reddit threads and TikTok edits aimed to disprove Davis’s assertion. “Kristin needs to be fr rn Samantha was the one that cared the most for Charlotte,” TikTok user @calliexeditss captioned a mashup of Charlotte and Samantha moments from the original HBO series.
“Remember Samantha was the first (and only) person Charlotte called after Trey finally was able to get it up ⛵️,” one fan replied to that video, while another responded, “They seem to be letting their personal feelings towards Kim Cattrall impact how they’re [sic] characters would feel about Samantha which is so so disappointing.”
However, not everyone thinks Davis’s assertion was inaccurate. “I think Kristin’s answer is genuine and in line with their characterizations in the show. Charlotte and Samantha were friends but not close in the way both were with Carrie,” one fan wrote on Reddit. “Cynthia’s feels shadier. That said, I always felt it was obvious they became a group by virtue of all being Carrie’s friends.”
That fan wasn’t alone, with another user claiming Davis’s answer “demonstrates an understanding of the characters,” while Nixon’s came off “like a bitter jab against Kim.”
Honestly, Samantha’s absence from And Just Like That… was always going to be a hard pill for OG fans to swallow. The original HBO series was about four women sticking together throughout their professional and romantic highs and lows in their 30s. However, by choosing not to invite Kim Cattrall to take part in the revival, the creators of AJLT… had to find a way to explain why the quartet was now a trio.
In season one, it was revealed that Samantha moved to the UK after Carrie (Sarah Jessica Parker) fired her as her publicist. “I told her that because of, you know, what the book business is now, it just didn’t make sense for me to keep her on as a publicist. She said ‘Fine’ and then fired me as a friend,” Carrie told Miranda (Cynthia Nixon) in season one. “Look, I understand that she was upset, but I thought I was more to her than an ATM.”
Despite the fact that Carrie and Samantha have found closure and have been shown texting throughout the series—with Cattrall even making a FaceTime cameo in season two—many fans are still sour over the original explanation.
“AJLT is a joke bc Samantha was RICH she never cared about the money and let’s not forget that all the fabulous parties they all went to was bc of Samantha’s connections,” TikTok user @calliexeditss captioned a mashup of Samantha’s most rich-girl lines from the original series on June 4, including a scene in which she offers Carrie her PR services for two martinis and a lunch. That video recieved more than 103,000 likes in under 24 hours.
“Absolutely no one is buying into the Samantha character assassination,” one user replied, receiving more than 23,000 likes of their own.
Is it possible Samantha’s own financial circumstances changed enough to cause friction between the besties? Sure, but the recent interview with Nixon and Davis seems to have sparked a renewed wave of protectiveness among Samantha fans.
