Pride Month isn’t just for the LGBTQ+ community.

While the annual celebration recognizes the contributions and advancements of queer folks throughout history, it also serves as a reminder that the fight for equality is very much ongoing. And as straight allies increasingly join the fun at parades, parties and other festivities, their voices can also be powerful tools in support of the cause.

Just ask Dwyane Wade, who has unwaveringly stood by his daughter Zaya Wade since she came out as transgender in 2020. And while the three-time NBA champion has faced scrutiny for his outspoken support of trans rights, he’s proven that his reputation is the least of his concerns.

“I think about the safety of my kid,” he noted during an appearance on the Club Shay Shay podcast in June 2023. “I think about the safety of other kids in the trans community. I think about how the world is trying to hush and exile an entire community like you do not exist.”

Because for Dwyane, 43, the ability to affect change through his own family’s visibility is a cause much greater than himself.

“I understand the position that I’m in,” he continued. “A lot of Black families in the community, they don’t see or hear these stories from us. I’m sure to a lot of people I look crazy—I don’t care about looking crazy to y’all. I care about making sure that I’m there for my kids.”

Daniel Radcliffe has similarly shown what it means to be an ally to the gay community—though he’s been hesitant to refer to himself as such.

“Anytime you hear somebody self-refer to themself as an ally, I’m always like, ‘I’m suspicious of you,’” he explained during a Trevor Project roundtable with trans and nonbinary youth in March 2023. “But there is an original meaning to that word, and there [are] some people who embody that very powerfully.”

The Harry Potter star certainly put his views into practice in 2020 after the franchise’s creator J.K. Rowling shared transphobic comments on social media. At the time, he responded by writing an op-ed for The Trevor Project expressing his continued solidarity with the trans community.

“It would have seemed like, I don’t know, immense cowardice to me to not say something,” he told The Atlantic in April 2024. “I wanted to try and help people that had been negatively affected by the comments. And to say that if those are Jo’s views, then they are not the views of everybody associated with the Potter franchise.”

Of course, embracing the LGBTQ+ community often leads to being embraced in return. Just ask Dylan Efron, whose triumphant turn on season three of The Traitors—not to mention his penchant for posting thirst traps online—have earned him a vocal queer fanbase he’s enthusiastic to engage with.

“I love how inclusive this community is,” he told Pride.com in an interview published in April. “That’s the best feeling in the world to be accepted like that.”
