Monterrey are ready to roll the dice as they square off against Inter Milan in a high-stakes group-stage showdown at the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup.

No team from Mexico has ever hoisted the coveted Club World Cup trophy, but Monterrey are out to rewrite the script. The road ahead won’t be smooth sailing, especially with Inter standing in the way, but the Liga MX powerhouse will be hoping to cook up some tactical surprises that could tip the scales in their favor.

Their buildup hasn’t been ideal, though, having stumbled in a recent loss to Toluca—a result they’ll be eager to shake off quickly.

As for Inter Milan, the sting of a 5-0 Champions League final humbling at the hands of PSG still lingers. Once again, European glory slipped through their fingers. But under the watchful eye of Cristian Chivu, the Nerazzurri have a golden opportunity to bounce back and stake their claim on the world stage.

The Argentine-born striker swapped South America for Mexico back in 2019 and has since earned his stripes with the national team, bagging his first cap for El Tri last year.

Backing him up is a star-studded supporting cast. Los Rayados boast plenty of seasoned names, including midfield maestro Sergio Canales, creative engine Oliver Torres, crafty winger Lucas Ocampos, and battle-hardened veteran Sergio Ramos.

The 39-year-old defensive general, who already has four Club World Cup titles under his belt, returns to marshal the backline after a month on the sidelines and will wear the captain’s armband with pride. However, center-back Carlos Salcedo remains a long-term absentee.

Set-piece wizard Canales has been pulling the strings since arriving at the club, racking up an impressive 31 goals and 16 assists in just two years. He’s expected to link up with longtime trickster Jesús Corona on the flanks, providing ammunition for Berterame as Monterrey looks to punch above its weight on the world stage.

Inter Milan head into Tuesday’s Club World Cup curtain-raiser with more than a few headaches in their attacking ranks. The forward line has taken a serious hit, with three second-string strikers from last season out of the picture.

Joaquin Correa and Marko Arnautovic have both packed their bags after departing on free transfers, while Mehdi Taremi is stuck in Tehran. The Iranian star had returned home to receive an award as the country’s top footballer, but ongoing airstrikes have left him grounded and unable to join the squad in the U.S.

Adding to the injury report, midfielder Piotr Zielinski is nursing a calf issue and remains a major question mark. However, this could throw the door wide open for some fresh faces, including returning loanees Sebastiano and Francesco Pio Esposito, as well as new recruits Petar Sucic and Luis Henrique.

Unless Cristian Chivu opts to shuffle the deck due to tired legs, the strike duo should remain unchanged, with Marcus Thuram expected to line up beside skipper Lautaro Martinez in their tried-and-tested 3-5-2. Martinez, who bagged 22 goals last season, is still shaking off the effects of a nagging thigh issue that hampered him late in the campaign—but when he’s firing on all cylinders, he’s a handful for any backline.
