Neeraj Chopra Wins Ostrava Golden Spike 2025 Event
Two-time Olympic medallist Neeraj Chopra on Tuesday won the men’s javelin throw competition at the Ostrava Golden Spike 2025 athletics at the Mestský Stadion in Czechia.
The 27-year-old Chopra, who recently emerged victorious at Paris Diamond League, won Golden Spike competition, a World Athletics Continental Tour (Gold Level) event, with a best effort of 85.29 on his third attempt.
Douw Smit of South Africa finished second with a personal best throw of 84.12m on his second attempt, while the Paris 2024 Olympic bronze medallist Anderson Peters came in third after a 83.63m throw which he logged in his opening throw.
Meanwhile, Germany’s Thomas Rohler, the Rio 2016 Olympic champion, finished seventh with a best of 79.18m.
Neeraj started with a foul on the first effort before throwing his spear 83.45m on his second attempt to move into third spot. His third attempt saw him top the field with an 85.29m effort before logging 82.17m with his fourth. His fifth attempt measured 81.01m before he ended his sequence with a foul.
Notably, the Ostrava Golden Spike meet record is held by Neeraj’s coach and world record-holder Jan Zelezny, who hurled his spear 94.64m in 1996. Zelezny is also involved with organising the event.
The Czechia event was Neeraj’s fifth competitive outing of the 2025 athletics season. He began his season by winning the Potch Invitational Meet in Potchefstroom, South Africa, in April. Thereafter, Neeraj finished second at the Doha Diamond League, where he breached the elusive 90m mark with a 90.23m throw to reset the Indian national record.
Neeraj finished second again at the Janusz Kusocinski Memorial in Poland and followed it up with a win at the Paris Diamond League meet last week, claiming top spot with an 88.16m throw.
Chopra will be seen in action next at the NC Classic 2025 in Bengaluru on July 5.
