Real Madrid chase PSG star to replace Luka Modric

Luka Modric’s time at Real Madrid is coming to an end.

After more than a decade of brilliance in thee Spanish capital, the 39-year-old midfielder will leave the club after the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup in the United States – which will end his 13-year spell in Spain.

Modric has been one of the most important players in the club’s modern history, winning 28 major titles, including an incredible six UEFA Champions League trophies and four La Liga crowns.

His departure will leave a big hole in Xabi Alonso’s midfield, and Real Madrid are already looking for replacements, as part of a new era.

Former Spain international Alonso, who took over as coach in June, is already trying out new midfield combinations with Jude Bellingham and Arda Guler alongside Fede Valverde.

Argentine talent Franco Mastantuono will also arrive when he turns 18 in August, but he’s seen as a long-term project and not an immediate solution in central midfield, so Alonso is expected to be active in the summer market.

PSG star emerges as key Real Madrid transfer optionAccording to a report from Spanish outlet Defensa Central,  Alonso is convinced Real Madrid could find themselves exposed if they don’t secure a reliable successor to Modric, with PSG midfielder Vitinha high on their wish list.

The Portugal international was a regular starter in Paris last season, playing a key role in their domestic and European success, alongside Fabian Ruiz and Joao Neves.

However, a transfer would be complicated with Jorge Mendes, the player’s agent, communicating PSG’s stance – Vitinha will not be allowed to leave unless a buying club meets the €130m [$153m] price tag.

🚨 Xabi Alonso believes Real Madrid will suffer if they fail to replace Luka Modrić or Toni Kroos and PSG midfielder Vitinha is a top target.

— Transfer News Live (@DeadlineDayLive) July 5, 2025While Real Madrid value Vitinha highly, they will not pay that amount, and Alonso will keep an open mind on cheaper options.

If no suitable targets emerge, Alonso is not against sticking with his current options of Bellingham, Guler, Valverde, Aurelien Tchouameni, Eduardo Camavinga and Dani Ceballos for the 2025/26 campaign.
