Miami legend Cam Ward’s ‘poised to start’ for Titans following season-ending injury to fellow QB
Cam Ward has had quite the journey during his college football career. He began at Incarnate Word, transferred to Washington State, and finished his collegiate run at Miami. In April, he was selected first overall by the Tennessee Titans—but despite that major milestone, Ward hasn’t received the respect many feel he deserves, largely because the Titans aren’t viewed as a high-profile franchise.
“Ward quickly became the common-sense choice for the QB-needy Titans at No. 1,” Bleacher Report’s Kristopher Knox wrote. “Once that became obvious, he stopped being a headline-grabbing prospect. And he largely faded into the offseason background after the draft because the Titans, with all due respect, are not a high-profile NFL franchise or one with a recent track record of success.”
Since being drafted, Ward has been labeled one of the least talked-about No. 1 picks in recent memory. While the hype surrounding him remains strong, the same can’t be said for the Titans as a franchise. There had been uncertainty about whether Ward would start in Week 1, but that changed after Will Levis suffered a season-ending injury. Now, Ward has a clear path to becoming Tennessee’s starting quarterback.
“With Will Levis out for the year, No. 1 overall pick Cam Ward is now poised to become the Titans’ starting quarterback, despite the fact that the team has not named him its starter,” ESPN’s Adam Schefter wrote.
Although the team hasn’t made anything official, Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer indicated that Ward was already ahead in the quarterback competition.
“The Will Levis injury news doesn’t really change much for the Titans. First overall pick Cam Ward was 2-1 in first-team reps vs. what Levis got in the spring, so while Levis had the chance to compete, Ward’s lined up to start. But now, they can just give all the work to Ward,” Breer posted.

With Levis sidelined, it’s now all but confirmed that Ward will lead the Titans into the season. As for Levis, his future with the franchise is uncertain. Ward, meanwhile, has just over a month to grow, adapt, and prepare to step into the role of NFL starter.
