Emma Raducanu secures major US Open boost thanks to career first despite requiring on-court treatment

Emma Raducanu is into the semi-finals of the Washington Open after a straight sets win over Maria Sakkari.

The British number three secured a 6-4, 7-5 victory in DC to move into the last four.

She also required on-court medical treatment on her way to clinching progression to the semi-finals.

Raducanu had her blood pressure taken after breaking Sakkari’s serve in the second set.

It came as she reduced her opponent’s lead in the set to 5-4 before winning the next three games to advance.

However, they did not stop Raducanu reaching the semi-finals in Washington for the first time in her career.

Prior to this year, her best performance had been the quarter-finals in 2022 and 2024.

She will face either Anna Kalinskaya or Clara Tauson in the last four on Saturday.

A victory this weekend would secure the Brit’s first singles title since her triumph at the 2021 US Open.

Raducanu also remains in the women’s doubles with partner Elena Rybakina.

Meanwhile, the 22-year-old’s run in the US capital have boosted her chances of being seeded at next month’s US Open.

Heading into this week’s tournament, Raducanu had been ranked 46th in the world.

It comes after she had slipped to British number three behind Katie Boulter and Sonay Kartal, who are ranked 41st and 45th, respectively.

Raducanu is now set to leapfrog them after moving up to 32nd in the live WTA rankings.

As a result, she is in line to be seeded at the Cincinnati Open, which begins on August 4.

Her current live ranking will also earn her a seeding at the US Open three weeks later.

When is the 2025 US Open?The US Open will get underway at the Billie Jean King National Tennis Centre in New York on August 25.

Singles action is set to run through to the men’s final on September 7, with the showpiece match in the women’s draw the day before.

Although the draw has yet to take place, the top 32 ranked players in each will be seeded for the event.

This year’s tournament will also see a new format for the mixed doubles.
