Shantae’s Previously Unfinished GBA Sequel Hair Whips PS5, PS4 Next Month

Hair you go

WayForward started work on Shantae Advance: Risky Revolution all the way back in 2002 for the Game Boy Advance, so this sequel to the Game Boy Color original has been over two decades in the making.

But, after debuting on a GBA cartridge earlier in the year, it’ll now launch on the more easily accessible PS5 and PS4 on 19th August.

The game will cost $24.99, but those who choose to pay an extra $10 can get a Digital Deluxe Edition, which includes the following DLC items:

Relic Hunter CostumePowers up Pike Ball attacks.High Voltage CostumePowers up Storm Puff attacks.Sizzle Armor CostumePowers up Fireball attacks.
It’s worth noting that if you pre-order the physical version of the game from Limited Run Games, all three of the aforementioned outfits will be included on the Blu-ray, so that’s a nice little bonus. Pre-orders for the boxed copies will open on 8th August.

As you’d expect from a Shantae sequel, this is a side-scrolling platformer with puzzles, collectibles, and more. You’ll find various belly dancing transformations, and tons of unlockable upgrades. Real old-school stuff!

The console version will also feature a local multiplayer battle mode, which is deliciously retro in nature but a first for the franchise.

Here’s what the official blurb says:

“Shantae is back in a 2D side-scrolling action adventure game 20 years in the making! The nefarious pirate Risky Boots has a ‘groundbreaking’ new plan that will leave Sequin Land spinning – by rotating the continent, she can move any town right to the coast for easy plundering! As Shantae, turn the tectonic tables on Risky by taking control of the land itself: shift, twist, navigate, and explore by swapping between mix-and-match multilayered levels! Hair-whip and belly-dance your way through scrambled lands, misplaced towns, monster-filled crypts, and daunting labyrinths. Six creature transformations, fierce boss battles, and a four-player versus mode await!”

So, are you in the market for a new Shantae game? This does look like it’d scratch the GBA itch you’ve been hankering for some early-2000s action, but we can’t help but feel the launch price is a little steep for our tastes.
