Paul Onuachu wasted no time in reminding Trabzonspor fans why the club fought so hard to secure his signature permanently this summer, delivering the decisive goal in their 1-0 victory over newly-promoted Kocaelispor in Monday’s Turkish Super Lig opener, Soccernet.ng reports.

Having been a talisman during his loan spell from Southampton in the 2023-24 campaign, where he netted 17 goals and became an instant fan favourite, Onuachu’s permanent arrival was one of Trabzonspor’s biggest transfer priorities.

Last season, Southampton refused to part with him despite persistent interest, but this summer the Black Sea club finally got their man.

After shaking off a worrisome injury, the towering Nigerian striker was thrust straight into the starting XI at the Papara Park. He was joined by compatriots Anthony Nwakaeme and Kazeem Olaigbe, with all three aiming to make a mark in what promises to be a fiercely competitive season. Olaigbe only switched from Rennes to Trabzonspor this summer.

Kocaelispor, playing their first top-flight game in years, showed flashes of spirit but struggled to cope with Trabzonspor’s physicality and set-piece knowhow.

The breakthrough arrived four minutes into the second half when Mustafa Eskihellac’s perfectly measured delivery found Onuachu, who expertly guided a header beyond the goalkeeper.

Olaigbe lasted 63 minutes before making way, while Onuachu’s evening ended in the 77th minute to warm applause. Nwakaeme was withdrawn in the 84th minute after an industrious display as an attacking midfielder.

The partnership of Onuachu’s aerial dominance, Nwakaeme’s creativity, and Olaigbe’s youthful energy on the flanks offers a tantalising prospect for the weeks ahead.

Next up is an away trip to Kasimpasa on Monday, August 18, where Trabzonspor will aim to build on this confident start.
