Skate’s Latest Dev Blog Talks Customisation, Seasonal Updates as Early Access Looms
Skate, the free-to-play revival of EA’s beloved skateboarding series, is heading towards its early access launch sometime in the near future, and as we approach that milestone, developer Full Circle has another dev diary blog post to tide you over.
The Grind Vol. 5 is available to peruse now, and this one focuses on customisation, music, and perhaps most interestingly, the studio’s post-launch plans for seasonal updates.
The blog reveals over 1 million people participated in the latest playtest; we expect that number will be dwarfed when early access finally arrives.
Anyway, players will have lots of customisation options, and Full Circle wants to make clear that you can earn lots of them through regular play. While there will be premium cosmetics you can buy with real money, at no point will that be a requirement.
Through playing missions and challenges, you’ll earn Rip Chips, which are only earnable through gameplay. These can then be spent in the shop on Product Boxes — essentially loot boxes, only you get one new item from a set pool of goodies each time you open one, so you will eventually get everything.
Opening boxes increases your Rip Score, which in turn unlocks yet more cosmetic items.
The game’s soundtrack, meanwhile, features 100 songs from artists of all kinds, including the likes of Turnstile, Denzel Curry, Little Simz, Skegss, Earth, Wind & Fire, and MF Doom. More music will be rotated into the game as seasonal updates come in.
Speaking of seasons, they will last about three months each, meaning four new seasons per year in Skate.
Each season will bring changes and updates to the city of San Vansterdam, including new events, game features, music, and more.
There will also be a Skate Pass per season, each with a free and premium track to progress.
Season 1 will get started shortly after early access begins.
It sounds like more details on seasons is coming in the next dev diary.
