Digital Foundry ‘Astounded’ By Silent Hill F Ahead Of Its September Xbox Launch

“I was astounded by what I saw visually”

So far, we don’t know a whole lot about what Silent Hill F actually is – except the fact that it marks the series’ return to Xbox after we missed out on Silent Hill 2 last year. We’ve seen footage of the game recently as it launches in just a few weeks though, and ahead of that September release, the folks over at Digital Foundry have played the game extensively – coming away very impressed by what they’ve seen.

First off, we must add the caveat that DF’s preview demo was playable on PC and PS5, so there’s no direct Xbox Series X|S reference point here. Still, Series X should be pretty close to PS5, which DF says was a “remarkably stable” 60FPS while looking fantastic from a visual standpoint as well. Here’s a snippet of their recent preview thoughts:

“I was astounded by what I saw visually speaking, because, this is an Unreal Engine 5 game – but it looks so clean. It’s remarkably stable, it doesn’t have the typical ‘splotchyness’ in the temporal noise that we’re so accustomed to with UE5 games, edges were super sharp in both cases [PC and PS5], the performance stable, stutters zero – everything about it looked and ran so well that you almost wouldn’t guess it’s a UE5 game.”

These comments about Silent Hill F being a technically impressive UE5 game come at an interesting time for the technology. Just last week, Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney suggested that the sorts of issues hinted at in the quote up above were because of a lack of optimisation from developers. Well, if that’s the case, it’s looking like Konami has cracked it with its new Silent Hill title.

Of course, this is just an early preview of the game from Digital Foundry here and we’ll have to wait for the full Xbox release to properly judge – we just thought the video was worth a look given how impressed they are with the title. The DF team aren’t always an easy bunch to please when it comes to the technical makeup of a game, but Silent Hill F has left a good impression so far!
