Why I Believe the Chiefs Will Start 0-2 for the First Time in the Mahomes Era

The Kansas City Chiefs have been the NFL’s model of consistency since Patrick Mahomes took over as the starting quarterback in 2018. They’ve dominated the AFC, won multiple Super Bowls, and have rarely been on the wrong side of history. That’s why the thought of the Chiefs starting 0-2 feels almost unthinkable. But looking ahead to this matchup against the Philadelphia Eagles, I believe that’s exactly what’s about to happen.

First, let’s start with the obvious: the Chiefs are facing an Eagles team that looks like a juggernaut. Philadelphia didn’t just beat Kansas City in last season’s Super Bowl—they embarrassed them, imposing their will on both sides of the ball. Then they opened the new season with a statement win, while Kansas City stumbled out of the gates in their opener. The difference in momentum couldn’t be more glaring.

Second, history isn’t on Kansas City’s side. The last time they were home underdogs with Mahomes under center came back in Week Six of 2022 against the Buffalo Bills. The Chiefs were getting 2.5 points in that one, and the Bills came into Arrowhead and walked out with a 24-20 victory. Now, here we are again—Kansas City as a rare home dog—and the same storyline feels likely to repeat itself.

Third, this Chiefs roster is more vulnerable than in years past. They’ve relied heavily on Mahomes’ brilliance to cover up deficiencies, but against elite teams like Philadelphia, those cracks are exposed. Whether it’s the offensive line holding up, receivers getting separation, or the defense slowing down the Eagles’ physical rushing attack, Kansas City just doesn’t seem equipped right now to outlast a team this complete.

Of course, betting against Mahomes has never been wise—he’s the type of quarterback who can single-handedly flip a game on its head. But football is the ultimate team sport, and in this matchup, the Eagles simply have too much firepower.

That’s why I believe we’re about to witness history: the Kansas City Chiefs, for the first time in the Mahomes era, will start a season 0-2.
