The best eyelash-growth serums help your lashes look so full that you won’t need layers of mascara or falsies. How do they work? The formulas hydrate, condition, and fortify your hair structure against breakage, and help them grow longer than they typically would before shedding during a normal hair-growth cycle, says Diane Hilal-Campo, MD, a board-certified ophthalmologist in Oakland, New Jersey. And our testers say they really do work—as long as you’re patient and consistent with application.

To help you narrow in on the hair-growth products that really deliver that Hollywood fringe, we put more than a dozen of the most popular, dermatologist-recommended lash serums to the test. Our team of reviewers dutifully swiped them on each day, taking notes on ease of use and overall efficacy. We saw incredible results with RevitaLash and Latisse (though the latter requires a prescription to use), but were similarly impressed with over-the-counter options like GrandeLash-MD and Lumify that made our testers’ natural lashes thick, full, and dark. Below, find the best lash-growth serums from our trials (most of which actually double as eyebrow serums too).

RevitaLash Advanced Eyelash Conditioner (3.5 ml)

Formulated to accommodate sensitive eyes, this beauty product was actually developed by a physician for his wife when she was undergoing cancer treatment. It has a peptide complex that strengthens and softens, and it’s the only formula on the market that also gives a built-in curl that lets you skip the curler and fake lashes and keep your natural ones softer. The product also happens to be the one that Meghan Markle “swears” by.

Our Glamour tester says: I’ve always been self-conscious about my short, straight lashes and spent decades experimenting with curlers, lifts, and conditioning serums. After about six weeks of using RevitaLash, my lashes were fuller and plentiful—so much so that they almost looked fake. I’ve now used it for over a year, and after the six-month mark, I found I didn’t need to apply it daily anymore. Using it just a couple of times a week has been enough to maintain my results. I still get constant compliments, and I love how much more awake my face looks even without makeup. I have really sensitive skin around my eyes, but I’ve never had irritation. And the value is unbeatable—one tube lasted me over six months, which makes it a far better deal than a monthly $100 lash lift. —Malia Griggs, Glamour commerce editor.

It may surprise you, but some of the best lash-growth serums can be found at the drugstore—and Lumify is one of them. “I like this product because the nutrient-rich formula is clinically proven hypoallergenic and is formulated without prostaglandins, mineral oil, or harsh irritating ingredients,” says Jennifer Tsai, OD, a board-certified optometrist in New York City. “In as little as two weeks with daily use, lashes will not only look fuller, but they’ll look healthier too.” The formula combines peptides, biotin, panthenol, and hyaluronic acid to condition and reduce breakage—and it pulls double duty as an eyebrow serum.

One Glamour tester says: I’ve used this almost every day right before bed for six weeks,” says . “It was easy to swipe on and I experienced no discomfort, which was my concern, as I’m prone to dry, itchy eyes. Actually, I really loved the feeling of the serum on my eyes, like I was hydrating my lashes at the end of the day. After a month, I saw a definite difference. My lashes felt longer and thicker than ever before—as did my brows, since this doubles as a brow serum too. —Emma Stein, Glamour reviewer

Grande Cosmetics GrandeLASH-MD Lash Enhancing Serum (4 ml)

Powered by a combination of vitamins, peptides, and amino acids, this ophthalmologist-tested formula delivers softer, fuller lashes and minimizes breakage within six weeks. “I started using this item during COVID, since I could no longer get eyelash extensions, and couldn’t believe how well it worked,” says Limor Weinberg, a board-certified nurse practitioner with a master’s in aesthetics. “I’d been getting extensions on and off for eight years, so my lashes weren’t in the best shape. After 30 days of regular use, my lashes were noticeably longer; after 90 days they were touching my eyebrows.” The precise applicator makes it easy to swipe onto the upper lash line, and you can choose between six-week, three-month, and six-month supplies (we’ve linked to the six-week).

One Glamour tester says: I was scared to try an eyelash serum because I have extremely sensitive eyes (and wear contacts), but the Grande Serum never irritated my eyelids. I alternated between applying it before bed or during the day paired with tubing mascara—really, whenever I remembered. My application wasn’t the most consistent, but I was pleasantly surprised that my lashes grew longer after just a month. I’m excited to see how much more eyelash growth this will result in once I start using it more consistently. —Jenifer Calle, Glamour senior commerce editor

RapidLash Eyelash Enhancing Serum (3 ml)

What sets this lash serum apart isn’t just that it clocks in at a more moderate price point than some of its peers, but also that it features a six-ingredient complex to target various pain points—polypeptides to limit breakage, panthenol to nourish, and amino acids to fortify proteins, among others. Overall, it’s one of the more conditioning options we tried, which makes it ideal for those with brittle lashes. “Honestly, I don’t have the budget for the more expensive options, so I was really excited when a friend recommended this one,” one reviewer told us. “Sure, I had to wait eight weeks or so, but I definitely notice a difference in length and density with consistent (daily!) use.”

One Glamour tester says: I applied RapidLash nightly for over seven weeks, following the instructions exactly. Before starting, my lashes had some length but lacked thickness, so mascara was a staple. By week six, they looked longer and more defined, though I didn’t see much added volume. The serum seemed to extend existing lashes rather than spark new growth, which actually worked for me—I like a more natural look. I didn’t have any irritation, and I started skipping mascara on casual days, as a nice bonus. My lashes so long that I eventually stopped using the product regularly and only applied it occasionally for maintenance. —Missy Henrikson, Glamour reviewer

Olaplex Lashbond Building Serum (4.5 ml)

The high-quality serum from your go-to brand for long, silky hair works with a unique patented peptide blend for thickening. Its ingredient list features nourishing elements like hyaluronic acid to keep those delicate hairs moisturized and healthy, which leads to less breakage over time—i.e., lusher lashes. One of our testers says she noticed less lash fallout and felt like her bottom lashes had lengthened too. Best of all, for some? There are no prostaglandins in this formula, making it a great choice for anyone who’s pregnant, breastfeeding, or who wants to avoid hormones.

One Glamour tester says: For a long time, I never understood why my lashes failed to hold a curl after using an eyelash curler, and why five-star mascara brands were unsuccessful at giving me the long, vampy lashes I craved. I was skeptical that Olaplex could change anything, so I was completely surprised when I noticed a small lift in my lashes after only a couple days of use. The serum gave my parched, short, little lashes the moisture they needed, and they responded by starting to curl up a little. After just a month (and aided by a curler), I was excited to see that my lashes actually held curl! I am now a serum convert and look forward to building even longer, curlier lashes in the future. —Charlotte Twine, CondĂ© Nast copy manager

Best for Lengthening: Latisse Lash Serum

Latisse Lash Serum (5 ml)

The big advantage for Latisse, the only FDA-approved treatment for fuller, thicker lashes, is that the results are proven. “It has side effects, but if you lost lashes due to hormonal changes or chemotherapy, or want to use it temporarily, you will see a good effect,” says Ashley Brissette, MD, MSC, a double-board-certified ophthalmologist. The drawback is that you have to see a health care provider for a prescription (although, you can virtually get one on a platform like Ro or Good Rx Care).

One Glamour tester says: My contacts were giving me dry eyes, and so I was rubbing my eyes a lot. This did a lot of damage to my once-lush lashes, so I decided to try Latisse. I was so impressed with not only how long my lashes got, but also with how nice and dark they became. At the suggestion of my dermatologist, I even used some of the excess product as an eyebrow-growth serum and noticed they also got darker and fuller. I will say that the bottle doesn’t always dispense an even drop, so I felt like I went through the bottle faster than it was supposed to last. One bottle lasted about three months of daily use. —Brigitt Earley, Glamour contributor

Best for Sensitive Eyes: Vegamour Gro Lash Serum

Vegamour Gro Lash Serum (3 ml)

Both Dr. Brissette and Dr. Hilal-Campo point to this vegan formula as a strong over-the-counter contender for a conditioner that reduces shedding. “It contains peptides and mung-bean extract, which is naturally rich in selenium, a mineral believed to play an important role in healthy hair growth,” says Dr. Hilal-Campo.

Christal Alert, a cosmetics scientist and founder of Tonal Cosmetics, says she uses this product every night: “I have naturally long lashes and didn’t see much difference in length, but I did notice a difference in hair retention. As the hairs were nourished, fewer fell out. Over time the lash line was noticeably thicker, and any gaps I had before were filling in.”

One Glamour tester says: Mascara can help me fake lashes, but using Vegamour’s serum felt like I was actually helping them reach their true potential. When I first started using it, I did not know how fast I would be able to recognize the growth, but it only took a few weeks. They looked as if I had taken my eyelash curler to them. What I truly admire about the serum is the fact that it’s vegan, especially when I’m using a product so close to my eyes. —Gabrielle Langdon, Glamour contributor

Kosas GrowPotion Fluffy Brow + Lash Boosting Serum (3.3 ml)

She’s vegan and she’s grace—she’s Miss Kosas GrowPotion. This versatile serum can be used to condition both the lashes and brows with its soft, padded applicator and combination of peptides, vegan keratin, and B5. Though its formula won’t actually stimulate new growth, it can help protect against breakage, retain your existing ones longer, and make them overall shinier and healthier. This was enough for our tester to feel like her lashes wound up looking thicker after three months of daily use.

One Glamour tester says: I first noticed thinning lashes this past fall, so I decided to test out this vegan lash-serum formula. I’ve tried serums before that made my lashes grow too long, to the point where they overlapped, so I was hesitant. But after a few weeks, I was impressed. The formula is lightweight—not sticky or goopy—and it glides on easily with the padded tip. I used it nightly for about two months, and by December, I had a real lash fringe instead of sparse, separated hairs. I also love how gentle it is, with skin-friendly ingredients like vitamin B5 and hyaluronic acid. —Alanna Martine Kilkeary, Glamour commerce writer

Frequently asked questions, answered

How do the best eyelash serums compare?

How did we test eyelash-growth serums?

We followed dermatologist recommendations to test our serums. If the serum contained hormones (prostaglandin analogues) and promised to increase lash length, then our tester used the product for at least 12 weeks to see results. The same testing minimum was applied to peptide-based serums that claimed to reduce breakage and shedding. Lash serums that focused more on conditioning and hydration (instead of growth) and that were hormone-free were tested for four weeks. The tester applied the serum daily (or twice daily, depending on the product’s directions) during that period, and evaluated it based on ease of use, effectiveness, how long it lasted before running out, and value.

Do eyelash-growth serums really work?

“Lash serums can work, but their effectiveness depends on the active ingredients in the formula,” says Rachel Westbay, MD, a board-certified dermatologist at Marmur Medical in New York City. The most effective include a prostaglandin analogue (PGA) called Bimatoprost, an FDA-approved ingredient that’s shown to extend the growth phase and to effectively increase length. “Latisse, for instance, is clinically proven to make lashes longer, darker, and thicker,” says Dr. Westbay. You need a prescription for it, but there are over-the-counter products that contain less prostaglandin (RevitaLash and GrandeLash-MD are among them). Their safety and efficacy aren’t as widely reported. It’s important to note that there are side effects to using prostaglandin analogues (more on that in our FAQs).

There are many other formulas on the market that do not contain prostaglandin (such as Vegamour and Kosas). Though they’re less effective at thickening and lengthening, they can help condition and strengthen.

What are the key ingredients in eyelash serums?

The most common ingredients you’ll find in these products’ formulas:

Prostaglandin analogues (PGAs): Stimulate hair follicles to go into (and extend) their growth phase. Bimatoprost is the prescription-strength PGA in Latisse, while isopropyl cloprostenate and cloprostenol ethyl amide are PGAs found in many over-the-counter options.Peptides and pea proteins: Strengthen your existing lashes, and may help them appear fuller and healthier, though they don’t extend the growth cycle.Hyaluronic acid; biotin; panthenol (vitamin B5); amino acids like arginine; castor oil; vitamin E; and other botanical oils: Hydrate and nourish to prevent breakage and increase their shine and health. While they do work, they take longer (a few months as opposed to a couple of weeks) to work their magic and may not yield as noticeable results, says Melanie Palm, MD, a board-certified dermatologist in San Diego. What are the side effects of prostaglandins?

“There are some side effects to prostaglandins, with common ones like irritation, red eyes, itchy eyes, and dry eyes,” says Omer Ibrahim, MD, FAAD, a board-certified dermatologist at Chicago Cosmetic Surgery and Dermatology. “More serious side effects include skin darkening, eyelid ptosis, periorbital fat atrophy, and blurred vision.”

“Systemic effects are rare but theoretically possible,” says Dr. Westbay. She recommends consulting a doctor before using a serum if you have a history of prostate cancer or elevated PSA levels, a history of benign prostatic hyperplasia, or are taking a DHT-blocking medication like finasteride (Propecia/Proscar) or dutasteride (Avodart). Avoid using serums containing prostaglandins if you’re pregnant or breastfeeding. Stop if you feel any side effects, and let your doctor know.

Are eyelash-growth serums safe?

Both dermatologists and ophthalmologists alike say these products are perfectly safe, though eye and/or skin irritations are always possible—particularly if you’re using a more potent serum like Latisse, which can cause discoloration of the skin and iris. To avoid this, it’s important to apply any serum properly and carefully.

Is eyelash serum safer than extensions or lifts?

Generally, yes—though it depends on the formula. Lash serums (especially prostaglandin-free ones) mainly carry risks of irritation if misused. Extensions and lifts involve adhesives and perming solutions that can cause breakage, allergic reactions, or lash loss with repeated use. While neither is risk-free, serums are often considered the gentler long-term option since they strengthen natural lashes instead of stressing them.

Is it safe to use eyelash serums if you’re pregnant?

“Lash serums containing prostaglandin analogues are not recommended during pregnancy due to potential systemic absorption and unknown effects on fetal development,” says Dr. Westbay. The risks are likely very low, but it’s better to not take that chance. There are plenty of formulas that are prostaglandin-free and rely instead on peptides, biotin, and conditioning agents instead.

How long does an eyelash serum take to show results?

“The time it takes to see if your serum works depends on the active ingredients in its formula (as well as your hair-growth cycle),” says Dr. Westbay.

For serums with prostaglandin analogues, some increased length is expected at four weeks but full effects take 12 to 16 weeks to see. If you cease use, your lashes will return to normal over the following months as they shed. For peptide-based serums, you can expect reduced shedding in six to eight weeks, but it may take up to 12 weeks to see improvement in fullness. For conditioning and hydrating serums, you may see an increase in health and shine in two to four weeks.Does castor oil make lashes grow longer?

There’s no published research proving castor oil directly boosts lash growth, but some experts say it may support healthier-looking lashes. “With careful application, the oil can provide improved growth to hairs with shorter growth phases such as lashes and brows, which tend to fall out naturally at about 100 days,” Maya Thosani, MD, a double board-certified dermatologist, previously told Glamur. She recommends applying it with a clean spoolie or brow brush to avoid spilling oil into the eye, which can cause irritation.

What eyelash-growth serum does Kim Kardashian use?

If you thought your favorite celebs’ fringes were natural, think again. Many have serums in their arsenal of beauty products, including Meghan Markle, Sydney Sweeney, Brooke Shields, Olivia Wilde, and Kim Kardashian (who’s been known to use Latisse).
