The 33-year-old actor and singer married music producer Benny Blanco on September 27, and wasted no time sharing a wedding day photo dump. From her halter-cut Ralph Lauren gown to her sculpted, etherial bob, the assignment was classic glamour, and hairstylist Renato Campora understood it. “In preparing Selena Gomez’s hair for a celebration of joy, unity, and love, every detail had to be perfect,” Campora told Glamour.
Campora, a hair artist for Joico, emphasized the importance of creating “flawless foundation” for the look: he began by washing her hair twice with Joico Defy Damage Protective Shampoo, followed by a 30-minute treatment with the Joico Defy Damage KBOND20 Power Masque. “This powerful combination resets the hair by removing buildup and thoroughly cleansing the hair,” he said.

Campora’s strategy also involved a bit of muscle memory: He created a nearly identical Old Hollywood bob for Gomez earlier this year for the Golden Globes, and another version for the Oscars. By now, Campora has us convinced that the proof is in the prep, starting with “hair that’s primed to absorb essential nutrients, reduce frizz, enhancing moisture, shine, strength, and protection from heat styling.” This ensures the style will look just as good at the after party as at the main event.

After washing Gomez’s shoulder-length hair, Campora says that he towel-dried and carefully sectioned it to evenly apply Joico’s Dream Blowout Glass 72HR Frizz Fighter from her midlegths to ends—his secret to “long lasting smoothness.”
Here’s where the true artistry comes in: “Using a rat-tail comb, I created a deep side part and transitioned back to the nape of the neck, where I sectioned the hair into two-inch sections,” Campora says. After treating each section with Joico JoiWhip Design Foam from roots to ends, he used a large round brush to add base volume. “I continued this technique across the entire head to achieve a voluminous and polished base,” he notes. “Once cooled, the hair is noticeably shiny, bouncy, and full of life.”

“For styling, I begin at the front of the head, just above the ear, working in one-inch horizontal sections,” Campora says. After spraying each section with a generous amount of the Joico Heat Hero Glossing Thermal Protector, he enlisted a three-quarter-inch spring curling iron to create “a marcel wave pattern, pinning each curl to cool and hold its shape.” To create seamless movement in Gomez’s hair, he started with her front pieces, worked his way to the opposite side, and styled the back of her head last (working upward from the base of her neck).
