Control’s New 120FPS Mode Tested In Latest Digital Foundry Analysis
“The advantages speak for themselves”

Earlier this month, Remedy unveiled its new patch for Control Ultimate Edition – adding in a bunch of current-gen features that had been present in the PC version for a number of months prior. Since then, Digital Foundry has been testing these features out across all platforms including Xbox Series X|S; the results of which are featured in the video up above.
For a bit of context, this patch included unlocked 120FPS support on current-gen consoles (except Xbox Series S), improved anti-aliasing, HDR support and more – all of which have been tested out by the DF team.
And, the results are actually pretty interesting. In their testing of the 120Hz mode, Xbox Series X performance is actually closer to PS5 Pro than the standard PS5 – average frame rates during the game’s introduction are as follows: PS5 – 70.7FPS, PS5 Pro – 86.3FPS, Xbox Series X – 82.3FPS. As we mentioned earlier, Series S still tops out at 60FPS maximum.
There’s also a 40FPS mode for 120Hz users on Series X if you prefer graphics over sheer performance, and the new anti-aliasing techniques have also been looked at in the analysis. The nitty gritty of these tests are detailed in the above video, and we’ll summarise the team’s conclusion on this new Control patch below:
“Control’s new October update for console truly makes the most of the hardware at hand. The 120Hz output, unlocked frame rate mode and VRR support all have clear use cases here. Likewise, the graphics mode’s new 40FPS is an excellent addition that strikes a happy middle ground in performance and visual quality.”
Anyway, if you think that all this makes it the perfect time to jump into Remedy’s mind-bending action game on Xbox, then we’ve got good news for you! Control Ultimate Edition is included in all tiers of Xbox Game Pass, and it’s currently on sale at 90% off right now digitally as well – coming in at just $3.99 / £3.49 on the Xbox Store!
