Chargers’ Oronde Gadsden’s breakout Week 7 performance just got even better
Los Angeles Chargers tight end Oronde Gadsden II had one of the best games a rookie tight end has ever had during the team’s Week 7 loss to the Indianapolis Colts. Much of it was overshadowed by the team’s loss, but it was a remarkable performance.Ā
Gadsden became just the fourth rookie tight end in the Super Bowl era to post a game of 150 receiving yards, breaking Antonio Gates’ franchise record in the process. His official statline for the game was seven receptions for 164 yards and one touchdown.Ā
That was a great game for those who had him in their fantasy lineups. Among those who didn’t start Gadsden in fantasy last week was his own father, a former player himself. Not only did his dad say he didn’t start him when speaking to a Miami radio station, he said he has no plans to change that.Ā
“It’s the second week in a row I’ve lost by under 10 points, and in my league they were like, ‘What dad leaves his son on the bench? We playing fantasy football now … he’s going to stay on the bench,” Gadsden said. “Nobody else got him, we cool with it, I’m cool. He gon’ ride the pine!”, said Oronde Gadsden, Sr.Ā
The elder Gadsden, undrafted out of Winston-Salem State in 1995, spent six seasons with the Miami Dolphins. He had 227 receptions for 3,252 yards and 22 touchdowns in his career.Ā
His son was seen as a potential steal in the fifth round of this year’s draft, and after beginning the season on the gameday inactive list, he has emerged as one of the top offensive options on the roster.Ā

If he continues to play like he did last week, his dad will likely change his tune on putting him into his starting lineup, at least if he’s trying to win.Ā
