Adverse Weather Poses a Problem for NASCAR in North Wilkesboro as Dale Jr’s Cars Tour Takes a Hit

The much-awaited zMAX CARS Tour Series at North Wilkesboro has been bit by the weather gods ahead of its first event on Tuesday. Heavy rains and precipitation in the West North Carolina region have forced Dale Earnhardt Jr and his team to push The Reverend 100 event on Wednesday.

However, if the rain continues to come down heavy on the region in which the track is located, the entire CARS Tour event will have to take a back seat as it would clash with NASCAR’s very own All-Star weekend.

With the Pro Late Model event rescheduled for Wednesday, the CARS Tour fans are expected to witness a doubleheader. Sharing the update about the new changes to the schedule, the CARS Tour via X wrote, “Due to Impending weather, the Reverend 100 at North Wilkesboro Speedway has been postponed until Wednesday, May 15, 2024.”

The announcement further added that the grandstands will open at 9:30 am. The qualifying period begins at 5:00 pm. As far as the events go, the Late Model Stock car race will go green at 8:30 pm, followed by the Pro Late Model. Also, the tickets purchased by fans for the Tuesday event will be valid on Wednesday.

However, there is a bigger concern looming over the NASCAR All-Star event, as any more potential delays for the CARS Tour event make things tricky for NASCAR’s weekend schedule. Sharing the potential outcome of the scenario, Bob Pockrass via X wrote, “I just figured if it rains today and tomorrow, CARS would race Thursday but they might need that day to get some things at the track ready for all-star weekend so if it rains tomorrow, tbd for CARS Tour events.”

In any scenario, it’s fair to say that the NASCAR All-Star will be prioritized over the CARS Tour event at North Wilkesboro. Thus, pushing the Late Model and Pro Late Model Stock car racing events event later this month or even ahead.

While the trip alone to the historic short track is worth the hype, but the 2024 event comes with a promise. The promise of solving the current Next Gen car’s short-track package with the roll-out of the new tires by Goodyear. Teams will have the option to choose from three tire compounds, which also include the wet weather tire.

The first option is the prime tire, which is a slick racing tire as determined by the test performed at the newly paced racing surface at North Wilkesboro. However, the hype is around the option tire, which is the same as the slick tires but with a softer, faster-wearing compound. The colored markings will differentiate all three tire compounds. Prime tires will be yellow, the wet-weather tires will be white, and the option tire marked red.

The Cup drivers and the fans have well received NASCAR’s intermediate package. However, despite the hopes of the Bristol night race, the short-track package is still shy of delivering the goods, and this is where the tire experimentation at the All-Star race just might prove to be decisive.
