Welcome to Bleacher Report’s live coverage of AEW Collision on August 31.
AEW is still dealing with the fallout from All In, but it is also trying to set up the All Out pay-per-view next weekend, so there are a lot of moving parts right now.
Here is a look at what AEW advertised for Saturday’s show:
The Undisputed Kingdom vs. FTRLee Moriarty, Johnny TV and Beast Mortos vs. Orange Cassidy, Kyle O’Reilly and HologramKyle Fletcher vs. Tomohiro IshiiQueen Aminata vs. Hikaru Shida vs. Serena Deeb vs. Thunder RosaLet’s take a look at what happened on this week’s Collision.
Moriarty, Television and Mortos vs. Hologram, O’Reilly and Cassidy 1 of 8
Collision.AEW
KOR and OC came out together before Hologram made his entrance for this trios bout against Moriarty, Mortos and Johnathan Television.
O’Reilly and JTV kicked things off with a nice exchange of counters and takedowns. Moriarty and Cassidy followed that up with a nice sequence.
Mortos served as the wrecking crew for his team due to his size, but his luchador experience meant he was able to keep up with his smaller opponents.
This was a fun match that managed to include the usual amount of chaos while still making it relatively easy to keep track of who was legal.
Hologram and Mortos stole the show with their high-flying antics, but everyone had an opportunity to show off a bit.
The final couple of minutes saw everyone get to hit at least one big move before it ended with Hologram pinning Johnny TV with a beautiful reverse Spanish fly.
Result: Hologram, Cassidy and O’Reilly won
Grade: B
Notable Moments and Observations
Hologram’s entrance is cool but a few small additions would make it really stand out.Ā Anthony Ogogo was not at ringside, but Shane Taylor and Taya Valkyrie were.Ā Whatever counter Johnny was trying with OC and KOR didn’t go as planned.Ā The way Moriarty countered Hologram’s arm drag was awesome.Mortos hit a nice spinning lariat on O’Reilly.Ā The reverse Spanish Fly was amazingBang Bang Gang vs. Premier Athletes2 of 8
Juice Robinson, Austin and Colten Gunn took on Tony Nese, Ariya Daivari and Josh Woods in a trios match. Austin was quickly cornered and double-teamed to put The Premier Athletes in control.
AEW is clearly trying to transition the Bang Bang Gang into being a babyface trio, so pairing them with a team as despised as The Premier Athletes was a good call.
The crowd was firmly behind Robinson and The Gunns, especially during their entrance and during the hot tag sequence.
Juice went wild on everyone as the fans cheered every move. Colten pinned Woods to score the win for his team. This was short and somewhat uneventful, but it was a fun few minutes.
Result: Bang Bang Gang defeated Premier Athletes
Grade: C+
Notable Moments and Observations
Woods is too good for Premier Athletes. He needs to be given a solo push or aligned with someone on his level.Ā Robinson has been compared to a lot of muppets online, but he’s more like one of the Fraggles.Ā Mark Sterling plays a great stooge because he’s not afraid to bump.Ā Undisputed Kingdom vs. FTR3 of 8
Collision.AEW
Dax Harwood and Cash Wheeler took on Matt Taven and Mike Bennett in the third contest of the show.
The Undisputed Kingdom was looking to bounce back after losing the ROH tag titles recently, but FTR was also looking to gain some momentum after failing to win the AEW tag titles at All In.
All four of these guys are well-established talents, so this being a good match goes without saying. It may not be a Match of the Year candidate, but it is definitely one of the highlights from this week’s show.
This was a good display of what solid tag team wrestling looks like when you don’t have interference from anyone at ringside.
After he realized he wasn’t the legal man, Cash moved to Dax could pin Taven for the win. Their celebration was cut short by The Grizzled Young Veterans.
Result: FTR defeated Undisputed Kingdom
Grade: B
Notable Moments and Observations
Roderick Strong was nowhere to be seen.Ā It would be weird to see Taven as a babyface. He is such a natural heel.Ā The sequence of German suplexes was fun.Ā Lance Archer was shown assaulting several random people backstage.Ā 8-man Tag Match4 of 8
The Outrunners.AEW
Jacked Jameson, The Iron Savages and Turby Floyd took on Lio Rush, Action Andretti and Top Flight in an 8-man tag match this week.
This was a case of four high-flyers taking on four powerhouses. Leila Grey and Truth Magnum were in their respective team’s corner.
Predictably, Rush, Andretti and the Martins picked up a quick win. This bout was too fast to be memorable but did include a couple of fun moments.
Result: Top Flight, Rush and Andretti won
Grade: C+
Notable Moments and Observations
Dante and Darius hitting airplane spins was impressive.Ā The pilot outfits are a weird choice.Ā Kyle Fletcher vs. Tomohiro Ishii5 of 8
Collision.AEW
Don Callis accompanied Fletcher to the ring for his match against NJPW mainstay, Ishii.
They immediately began trading stiff forearm shots in the middle of the ring and didn’t stop until Fletcher used a kick.
This was not the first time these two had fought, but it was their first singles match. They didn’t take long to find their groove and establish some chemistry.
This was a tremendous performance from both men. Ishii looked like the weathered veteran he is while Fletcher looked like a future world champion just waiting for the right moment.
Two piledrivers finally put The Stone Pitbull away to give The Protostar the win.
Result: Fletcher defeated Ishii
Grade: B+
Notable Moments and Observations
The initial exchange of forearms got a big pop.Ā Ishii turned Fletcher inside out with a shoulder tackle.Ā Ishii is one of the only people who can convincingly no-sell a strike from someone bigger than he is.Ā Who had Ishii hitting a hurricanrana on their bingo card?Komander vs. Buddy Matthews6 of 8
Collision.AEW
Buddy Matthews was in singles action on Saturday in a singles match against Komander.
While Komander is more known for his high-flying moves, Matthews has enough speed and agility to keep up with anyone, so this was a sprint from the moment it began.
Matthews had a significant power advantage and used it at every turn. The masked Superstar put up a valiant effort but was taken out by a vicious knee strike.
Brody King arrived and raised Buddy’s hand to celebrate. This was an energetic 10-minute bout with a lot to like.
Result: Matthews defeated Komander
Grade: B
Notable Moments and Observations
Matthews has put on a lot of muscle since leaving WWE. He is at least 30 pounds too heavy for 205 Live now.Ā Komander needs something to make him stand out. His mask is similar to other wrestlers in AEW, so it’s not immediately identifiable.Ā It shouldn’t look easy to catch a full-grown man doing a moonsault.Ā Aminata vs. Shida vs. Deeb vs. Rosa7 of 8
Collision. AEW
Shida, Deeb, Aminata and Rosa competed in a Fatal 4-Way to determine who would get the next shot at the TBS title.
These four women are all at different points in their careers, but they also represent some of the best the women’s division has to offer.
Rosa and Shida are former champions, Deeb is a respected veteran and Aminata is an up-and-coming star.
They all meshed well to create a competitive four-way match that made it feel like all four women really wanted that title shot.
Shida ended up winning with a Katana Kick to Aminata. She will now face Mercedes at All Out for the TBS Championship in what should be a classic.
Result: Shida defeated Aminata, Deeb and Rosa
Grade: B+
Notable Moments and Observations
The way AEW built this match through the show with videos and interviews was great.Ā Rosa’s face paint was awesome, as usual.Ā Deeb was not holding back on some of her strikes.Ā The show went into overtime to stay with the match.Ā The Final Word8 of 8
This week’s Collision managed to set up a couple of new matches for All Out while still delivering some fun matches.
Fletcher vs. Ishii was the best thing from the show, but there were other bouts worth checking out if you watch it on DVR.
Matthews vs. Komander had some fun moments, the opening trios bout was entertaining, and the main event Fatal 4-Way put four great talents on display.
Not only did we find out who would be challenging for the TBS title at All Out, but we also saw the feud between MxM Collection and House of Black continue.
All in all, this was a solid episode. Not the best but by no means bad. In fact, it may have been slightly above average in a lot of ways.
