CollisionAEW

Welcome to Bleacher Report’s live coverage of AEW Collision on June 1.

We’re still in the fallout period from Double or Nothing but with Forbidden Door coming up a the end of the month, AEW is already setting up matches for the card.

Here is a look at what AEW advertised for Saturday’s show:

Kyle O’Reilly vs. Will OspreayClaudio Castagnoli vs. Johnny TVKatsuyori Shibata and Daniel Garcia vs. The WorkhorsemenThunder Rosa vs. Reina DoradoLio Rush vs. Roderick StrongShane Taylor Promotions vs. West Coast Wrecking CrewCage of Agony in actionLet’s take a look at everything that went down on this week’s Collision.

Lio Rush vs. Roderick Strong1 of 7

Collision.AEW

We kicked things off with Tony Schiavone welcoming FTR to the ring. Dax Harwood was sporting a cast on his left hand and bandages on his head from Anarchy in the Arena.

After they vowed to make The Elite’s lives difficult, we got a video showing Jack Perry reacting after being set on fire at Double or Nothing.

When we went back to the arena, Strong made his entrance for his match against Lio. The Messiah of the Backbreaker quickly neutralized Lio’s speed and beat him down in the corner in a fit of rage.

Strong did a great job showing his frustrations after losing to Will Ospreay at the PPV. With Mike Bennett and Matt Taven at ringside, Lio had an uphill battle.

This match had a lot of energy and gave Strong a chance to look dominant. This wasn’t a squash, so Lio still looked like a valiant competitor despite losing in the end.

Result: Strong defeated Lio

Grade: B+

Notable Moments and Observations

It was cool to see the Workhorsemen in the intro video. There was a very annoying fan yelling over and over during the promo. Would a tag team with Rush and Lio Rush be fun?Strong must love getting to work with a guy like Lio because he can just toss him around like he weighs nothing. Lio’s jacket looked like a sleeping bag with sleeves. It’s probably pretty comfortable. Daniel Garcia and Katsuyori Shibata vs. Workhorsemen2 of 7

Collision.AEW

Garcia was out first for his tag team match with Shibata against JD Drake and Anthony Henry.

Henry made the mistake of trying to outstrike Shibata and paid for it when The Wrestler took him down and hit a PK.

Drake went down at ringside with what appeared to be a knee injury. The doctors checked him out while Henry took over in the ring.

After the break, Drake appeared to have recovered a bit and got in some offense, but you could tell his leg was still an issue. If it was a real injury, let’s hope he is alright. If he was selling, it was pretty brilliant.

Despite a late-match rally from the Workhorsemen, Garcia and Shibata scored the win to cap off a solid match that was only slightly impacted by a potential injury.

Result: Shibata and Garcia defeated The Workhorsemen

Grade: B

Notable Moments and Observations

Henry was recently rehired by AEW after a short absence. It was great to see him back to full health. Drake was trying really hard to shake off the injury when he was on the apron. The moonsault from Drake looked awesome. Thunder Rosa vs. Reina Dorada3 of 7

Collision.AEW

Dorada was making her AEW debut this week in a match against Rosa, who was looking to rebound after suffering a loss to Deonna Purrazzo at DoN.

They shook hands and had a clean lockup to get things going. Rosa grounded Dorada and used a few different holds to inflict punishment.

When the newcomer tried to trade strikes, La Mera Mera rocked her with a few hits before dropping her with a Tiajuanna Bomb for a two-count. She immediately locked in a submission for the win.

This was pretty short and uneventful, but everything they did was executed well.

Result: Rosa defeated Purrazzo

Grade: C

Notable Moments and Observations

Rosa went with just the bottom half of her face for the paint this week. It was a cool look. The crowd was quiet during this one, likely because Dorada was an unfamiliar talent. Cage of Agony in Action, Claudio Castagnoli vs. Johnny TV 4 of 7

Collision.AEW

Brian Cage, Toa Liona and Bishop Kaun were in action against Danny Rosa, Ricky Gee and KM. This was an easy squash for Cage of Agony.

Despite it being one of the easiest victories this trio has gotten, it had a couple of fun spots and made them look like a brutal trio.

Result: Cage of Agony won

Grade: Incomplete

Johnny TV was accompanied to the ring by Taya Valkyrie for his match against Castagnoli, who didn’t have anyone from Blackpool Combat Club with him.

This match played out exactly how it needed to. The Swiss Superman used his power to throw Johnny around while the high-flyer used his agility to both sell his opponent’s offense and hit some moves of his own.

Valkyrie helped distract Castagnoli so her husband could hit a low blow, but it wasn’t enough to get him the win. They continued to have a competitive fight through a commercial break, but Valkyrie kept trying to insert herself.

Even after several instances of interference, the former ROH champion got the victory. There was a bit too much interference without a response from the ref, but most of what we saw was enjoyable.

Result: Castagnoli defeated Johnny TV

Grade: B-

Notable Moments and Observations

Nigel said the jobber team looked like a Russian nesting doll. Castagnoli held Johnny up for a vertical suplex for a long time. Johnny’s dive over the ring post was awesome. Shane Taylor Promotions vs. West Coast Wrecking Crew5 of 7

Collision.AEW

Shane Taylor and Lee Moriarty were in action this week against Royce Isaacs and Jorel Nelson.

This was the first AEW appearance for WCWC but not their first rodeo. They have been working together since 2018 and held the Defy Wrestling tag titles.

Even though they were a bit more recognizable than most enhancement talents, they stood no better chance than any other jobbers. This bout was booked to be a dominant performance for STP, not an impressive debut for Nelson and Isaacs.

This wasn’t completely one-sided and had some good action that allowed Taylor to look like an absolute monster and Moriarty like a technical wizard. Taylor got the win for his team and Anthony Ogogo hit a cheap shot after it was over just to put an exclamation point on it.

Result: STP defeated WCWC

Grade: C+

Notable Moments and Observations

Isaacs and Nelson are great talents. It would be cool to see him pop up in AEW more often. Taylor has one of the best punches and one of the best powerbomb in all of wrestling. Will Ospreay vs. Kyle O’Reilly (International Title)6 of 7

Collision.AEW

This week’s main event was the kind of match that you know going into it is going to be good because both men are so well-regarded for their in-ring ability.

Ospreay and O’Reilly are both incredibly versatile but focus on different things in their offense. KOR is very submission and strike-heavy in his offense while Ospreay uses high-flying offense mixed with a variety of other techniques.

They started slow and gradually increased the pace and intensity until this became the most hard-fought match on the card.

This is one you need to see for yourself because reading a recap of the action won’t do it justice. If you know how talented these two are, then you know how much fun this was.

These two men represent some of the best talent AEW has to offer, but it was the champion who emerged from this match with the win to retain his title.

Result: Ospreay defeated O’Reilly

Grade: A

Notable Moments and Observations

KOR is a babyface but the crowd clearly favored Ospreay. O’Reilly approaching the first exchange of each match as if he were an amateur wrestler is such a fun detail that is unique to him. KOR’s counterkick against Ospreay’s handspring looked fantastic. They timed it perfectly. The Final Word7 of 7

Collision.AEW

If AEW wants to elevate the International Championship to being the secondary men’s singles title, then putting it on Ospreay was the best decision.

This man does not know how to have a bad match. Sometimes they are good and sometimes they are great. He’s one of those rare talents who elevates everyone he works with and himself at the same time.

But this is not meant to take anything away from O’Reilly. He is one of the best at what he does, so seeing him put on an absolute banger with Ospreay in the main event should surprise nobody.

This was a solid show with a couple of good matches and segments, but nothing came close to being as good as the final 20 minutes of the show. Hopefully, these two cross paths again soon.
