Rampage. AEW

Welcome to Bleacher Report’s live coverage and recap of AEW Rampage on January 19.

Following a segment on Dynamite, a match was booked for Friday’s show between Matt Sydal and Chris Jericho, but they did not go into this match as enemies. Sydal said Jericho needed to face someone who has beaten him before to get back what he is missing.

The Workhorsemen continued to get more screen time in 2024 when Anthony Henry stepped into the ring with Penta El Zero Miedo.

We also saw Kris Statlander vs. Queen Aminata, and Jeff Hardy took on Darby Allin with the winner earning a sponsorship from Hot Topic for life. Ok, the last part was a joke, but the match did happen.

Let’s take a look at everything that happened on Friday’s Rampage.

Chris Jericho vs. Matt Sydal1 of 4

Rampage. AEW

This week’s Rampage opted to feature the entrances for the first match between Chris Jericho and Matt Sydal instead of starting with them already in the ring.

This match didn’t have the usual animosity between opponents we expect. Both of these men came into this with a healthy respect for the other, so this was all about pride.

They seemed evenly matched at first, but Jericho’s experience and size advantage came into play a few times and allowed him to take control.

After the break, the former Matt Bourne started making a comeback and hit several high-flying moves, but he couldn’t put the former AEW champion down for the three-count.

After a decent hurricanrana from the top rope, Jericho hit the Judas Effect for the win to end the opening bout. This was good for what it was, but it lacked energy at points when it felt like they should have been picking up the pace.

Result: Chris Jericho defeated Matt Sydal

Grade: B-

Notable Moments and Observations

They likely showed the entrances so they could include the crowd singing along to “Judas.” Sydal has only physically aged about two years since he and Jericho feuded in WWE several years ago. Sydal did a good job making the Liontamer look very painful. Anthony Henry vs. Penta El Zero Miedo2 of 4

Rampage. AEW

Two tag team specialists stepped into the ring for a singles match this week when Penta took on Henry in the second bout.

Both of these wrestlers are very versatile, so we saw a little bit of everything. There were power moves, strikes, a few high-flying moves and some ground-based offense.

Even though the outcome of this bout was fairly obvious from the start, Henry and Penta did a fantastic job making it feel competitive.

This was short and would have benefitted from having more time, but the few minutes they had were full of good stuff. Penta scored the win with a package piledriver.

Result: Penta El Zero Miedo defeated Anthony Henry

Grade: B-

Notable Moments and Observations

Neither man had their partner at ringside, but Penta did have Alex Abrahantes out there. The double stomp is one of those moves that always looks painful because you can’t pretend to stomp both feet on someone. You either do it for real or you don’t.There was a great backstage segment after this with Saraya and Ruby Soho. Kris Statlander vs. Queen Aminata3 of 4

Rampage.AEW

Statlander usually comes into most matches knowing she is going to have a height and power advantage over her opponents, but that was not the case this week in her match with Queen Aminata.

Stokely Hathaway accompanied Stat to the ring, but she quickly told him to go stand somewhere else a couple of minutes into the match.

They had a good back-and-forth exchange leading into the commercial break. When we returned, Statlander picked up the win. Stokely tried to celebrate with her but see didn’t seem too interested.

This was a good match that would have been better without the break in the middle. The stuff with Stat and Stokely isn’t making much sense yet but if it leads to a heel turn for the former TBS champion, it will probably be a good thing in the end.

Result: Kris Statlander defeated Queen Aminata

Grade: B

Notable Moments and Observations

It was nice to see Aminata get an entrance this time. She is very charismatic and her entrance helps show that a bit. There was a fun moment early on when both women went for a kick and caught each other’s foot.
Darby Allin vs. Jeff Hardy4 of 4

Rampage. AEW

The main event of this week’s show was only the second singles match ever between Allin and Hardy.

In many ways, this was a match between two very similar people from different generations. They both enjoy taking big risks to excite the fans, and they both have a unique style both in the ring and with their attire.

Hardy was knocked out of the ring and hit with a huge senton from the top rope immediately, so they weren’t looking to waste any time with lockups and wristlocks.

The Charismatic Enigma regained his footing and threw Allin over the announce table. This was not a pretty match by any means, but sometimes that is a good thing. Both of these men pride themselves on being unconventional and bring that into the ring with them for every performance.

Hardy is aging like all of us, so he is not as nimble as he once was, but this might have been the best he has looked since returning from injury last year.

Hardy went through a table when Allin avoided a Swanton, so the former TNT champion had time to regain his composure. When they returned to the ring, he pinned Hardy with a Jackknife cover for the win.

Shockingly, Hardy refused a handshake after it was over and rolled out of the ring.

Result: B+

Grade: Darby Allin defeated Jeff Hardy

Notable Moments and Observations

Willow Nightingale showed up backstage and accused Stokely of having her flight canceled to keep her and Statander apart. Hardy didn’t do his usual dance at the top of the ramp for his entrance but still seemed like his usual excited self. Hardy’s face paint this week was one of the coolest designs he has come up with. Hardy it a cool neckbreaker from three different angles in a row.
