“Amazing career” – Mikel Obi reflects on Chelsea glory despite missing African FOTY award
Former Super Eagles star Mikel Obi has described his time at Chelsea FC as nothing short of extraordinary, Soccernet.ng reports.
During his tenure at the London club, the former midfielder amassed an impressive collection of honours, including two Premier League titles, four FA Cups, a Champions League trophy, and a UEFA Europa League title.
Despite this decorated career, Mikel never received the African Footballer of the Year award, a recognition many believed he deserved.
Reflecting on his time at Chelsea, however, the Nigerian football icon remains deeply satisfied with his achievements and considers his years at the club to be the pinnacle of his career.
“It was a massive relief. Obviously, it was going on for almost a year, I couldn’t play for any club because of the whole saga,” Mikel shared on the Obi One Podcast.
“But after that was settled, it was a massive relief for me, and I joined the club I really wanted to play for, which was Chelsea. I just couldn’t wait to be unveiled as a Chelsea player, because it was taking such a long time to get settled.
“But after that was done, you know, I was happy to be here. Amazing career. I had won everything there was to win. And my memory here is absolutely fantastic. I would never, never trade it for anything.”
Following Arsenal legend Nwankwo Kanu, Mikel Obi is regarded as the second most decorated Super Eagles player in Nigeria, cementing his legacy both at Chelsea and in Nigerian football history.
