Americans Abroad Weekend Rewind: Tillman, Pepi, and more
PSV’s dominance in Eredivisie play continued Saturday with Malik Tillman and Ricardo Pepi both getting on the scoresheet at Almere City.
Tillman scored once and logged 90 minutes from the start while Pepi came off the bench to score PSV’s final goal in a 7-1 victory. Fellow American Richie Ledezma started and played 88 minutes as he continued his right back role in the squad.
With PSV leading 3-1, Tillman scored the reigning champions’ fourth goal of the match. He picked up Joey Veerman’s over-the-top pass before slotting home his second goal of the new league campaign.
Pepi, who has limited opportunities so far this season, came off the bench in the 77th minute and had the final say. His right-footed strike into the far corner sealed a lopsided result for PSV and gave the U.S. men’s national team forward his first goal since March 17.
Sitting at 3-0-0 with a +12 goal differential, PSV look to be frontrunners to repeat as Eredivisie winners this season. Peter Bosz’s squad will host Go Ahead Eagles on September 1 in their final match before the international break.
Elsewhere in England, Josh Sargent and Brenden Aaronson both scored in EFL Championship play. Ethan Horvath made a trio of key saves in Cardiff City’s 1-1 road draw with rivals Swansea City.
In Italy, Christian Pulisic scored in AC Milan’s road loss to Parma.
In France, Mark McKenzie made his Toulouse debut while Caleb Wiley helped Strasbourg to a home win over Rennes.
In Germany, Joe Scally went the distance but Borussia Moenchengladbach lost to Bayer Leverkusen at home. Lennard Maloney and Heidenheim picked up three points at newly-promoted St. Pauli.
Elsewhere, Brandon Vazquez scored once in Monterrey’s draw with Club Tijuana. Cameron Carter-Vickers and Celtic earned three points at St. Mirren. George Bello and LASK lost to Austria Vienna. Bryan Reynolds and Westerlo earned one point at home.
