Arkansas Razorbacks lose talented player to transfer

HOGS’ list of transfer entrants continues to grow

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — Layden Blocker has announced his intention to enter the transfer portal.

The 6-foot-2, 180 pound combo guard was the No. 35 prospect in the 2023 class. He entered the transfer portal following five straight games in which he never played.

Coach Eric Musselman trimmed Blocker’s playing time to nothing following an 85-82 loss to Vanderbilt. Blocker played six minutes during the loss, pulled in one rebound and was turned over once.

Blocker was also the No. 8 point guard in the nation and spent one season in Wichita, Kansas at Sunrise Christian. He was the No. 2 player in Kansas at the time of his signing. The Little Rock native totaled 21 offers including Auburn, Alabama, Ole Miss, Oklahoma, Baylor, Kansas, Tennessee, Texas Tech and Oklahoma State.

As a freshman with the Razorbacks, Blocker played in 27 games averaging four points, two rebounds, two assists and one steal in 13 minutes per contest. He shot 40% from the field, 62% from the free throw line and connected on 2-of-17 three point attempts.

Blocker struggled shooting the ball even more once SEC play started. He made only 31% of his shot attempts and just 15% from three.

Known as a ferocious perimeter defender, Blocker averaged 0.117 fouls per minute. The lack of fouling was less than the likes of Jeremiah Davenport and the forward tandem of Makhi Mitchell, Jalen Graham and Chandler Lawson.

A program to watch for Blocker’s services is Texas Tech. His former high school coach at Sunrise Christian Luke Barnwell is currently on the Red Raiders staff under first year coach Grant McCasland..

The departure of Blocker leaves a huge void for depth at point guard for Arkansas. Tramon Mark and Khalif Battle are the only guards with ball handling experience who have eligibility remaining.
