Smith is aiming at becoming a world champion for the second time in his career, having previously held the WBA (Super) and The Ring super middleweight titles between 2018 and 2020.

The 33-year-old is moving up a weight category this time out though as he bids to become Britain’s first light heavyweight world champion since Nathan Cleverly in 2017.

The fighter from Liverpool carries with him a 29-1 record into Saturday night’s bout in Canada having won his last two fights following his soul defeat to Canelo Alvarez back in 2020 in which he lost his two super middleweight world titles.

21 of Smith’s 29 victories have via knockout, including in his most recent fight back in August 2022 where he knocked out Mathieu Bauderlique in the fourth round on the undercard of Anthony Joshua’s second fight with Oleksandr Usyk in Saudi Arabia.

Standing in his way of being crowned light heavyweight world champion is the Canadian-Russian undefeated boxer Artur Beterbiev, a unified champion with three world title belts to his name.

The IBF, WBC and WBO champion carries with him a perfect 19-0 record into this weekend’s fight, with every victory coming by knockout.

The 38-year-old, who celebrates his birthday next weekend, last fought against another Brit, Anthony Yarde, at Wembley Arena 12 months ago, winning via TKO in the eighth round.
