Florida State University students and faculty are recovering following a scary incident on campus.

At least one person has died, six others have been hospitalized, and one person is in police custody, following a shooting on the campus in Tallahassee April 17, a senior law enforcement official briefed on the matter confirmed to NBC News.

A spokesperson from Tallahassee Memorial HealthCare hospital told the outlet that victims were being treated at the medical center, though their conditions have not been disclosed.

Students, faculty and staff on the campus were alerted to an active shooter in the “area of the student union” around 12 p.m. local time via an alert sent wide, as local law enforcement and the FBI attended to the scene. In an alert sent by the FSU X account, people on the campus were told to, “Lock and stay away from all doors and windows and be prepared to take additional protective measures.”

Following the shooting, FSU—which is one of the largest universities in Florida—announced that all classes and business operations on the campus were canceled for the remainder of the day. In addition, all sporting events throughout the weekend were also canceled.

“All Florida State athletics home events through Sunday, April 20, have been canceled,” the school announced via X. “Further updates on events scheduled for next week will be communicated when available.”

Florida State University student, Daniella Streety, recalled the scary events she witnessed in the aftermath of the shooting.

“I did see them carry out one student in what looked like on a stretcher and kept them in the road until an ambulance was able to pick them up,” she told NBC News. “Directly across from me there’s a building about 50 feet outside of the window. There was a student injured there as well and they had to transport them in a desk chair to the road to then be transported via ambulance.”

Sadly, this isn’t the first time there has been a fatal shooting on the FSU campus. In 2014, an alumni of the University opened fire inside of the library, injuring three people, before law enforcement shot and killed him.
